Ok so the group I DM for spend a lot of time in the taverns and inns drinking. They have approached me about a drinking competition and so i'm wondering how people deal with the rolls and rules of getting drunk and passing out etc?
Before when i've been handleing drinking i've just made the players make fortitude saves with the dc increasing each drink they have (depending on the potency of the alcohol consumed). So i'm just curious how other DM's handle it.
Looking forward to reading the replies

There are also some rules for this in the 3rd Edition Arm & Equipment Guide. |

That's pretty much how I do it. It's mostly something I just wing, but Con plays a factor, as does race - dwarves and elves I would say are more resistant to the effects of alcohol. |

Prior drinking experience would also be a factor. All other factors could be identical for two drinkers, but if one drinks every day and the other almost never drinks, then it's not the same scenario. |

Definitely. A heavy drinker would have more tolerance.
Then of course, there's body weight (I believe)--I don't think that automatically has anything to do with the CON score. |

I agree with what the people above said, body weight, "training", and, in conjunction to that, tolerance, all count into the mix. Although body weight/mass is a rather curious factor, as I have seen (and I was one of them) rather slim people drink excessive amounts of alcohol.
Alcohol is a poison, and the body can grow accustomes to it.
There is also the factor of having a "good" day. Even a "proficient" drinker can have a bad day and consume less alcohol than the day before. |

Although the last post for this thread was in 2007 I'll add this.
I would even take into account what kind of class the PC is as well as if the PC has a Prestige Class(such as Drunken Master, etc.) |
