I've long been very curious as to the precise nature of Khelben's deal with Fzoul, the deal which I'm assuming was the inciting incident in the Blackstaff's break with the Harpers. I know that this is fairly basic stuff, but for some reason I haven't been able to find allot of details about it. If someone could give me a quick summary of what's known, I'd appreciate it allot.

Do you have a copy of Cloak & Dagger? 'Twas mostly all detailed within that particular tome.

Steven Schend's also elaborated a little on what he can reveal about the relationship between Khelben and Fzoul through his replies here at Candlekeep (you can perform a search through the compiled reply files for more on this).

The situation is covered in Cloak & Dagger. Basically, Khelben gives Fzoul some kind of information on Lord Orgauth, and later arranges for him to gain possesion of an artifact called the Scepter of the Sorcerer Kings. In return for the information on Orgauth, Fzoul agrees to limit the Xvimlar's expansion to the east of the Thunder Peaks for 10,000 days.

Thanks for the summary, Pasta Fzoul, and for the references, Sage. I shall certainly read through Steven Schend's scroll. Nay, I'm afraid I do not haveCloak and Dagger. The tome in question is a 2 E supplement I believe, and I did not begin to follow the Realms until well after the advent of 3 E, [drawn in by R A Salvatore's tales of Drizzt. The value of those novels as starting points for Realms interest seems to be truly incalculable.] However, I shall definitely keep my eyes open for a copy; [I don't think WotC has it up for download.]

I'm sure that this has been discussed elsewhere, but we can only assume that this agreement has sprung a couple leeks since it's origination, from Fzoul's point of view at least. Fzoul agreed not to attempt to expand the influence of Xvim's church, and would, I think, have held to that agreement; but Xvim is gone now. Despite his adherence to what one might call the more "orderly" evil creeds, Fzoul strikes me as a rather slippery sort, particularly given his tendency to experience conversions at convenient times. I'm sure he would think nothing of considering the agreement void now that he is once again the Chosen of Bane, rather than the master of the Xvimlar. Also, when Fzoul learns of the events at the end of "Blackstaff", which he is bound to sooner or later, he may be even more inclined to break the pact. His agreement was, after all, with Khelben, and not with any wider organization.

I wonder what information about Lord Orgauth Fzoul considered valuable enough to sacrifice over twenty five years of Xvimlar expansion? [though admittedly with an artifact thrown in to the bargain]. Could it have just been the information that Orgauth was a Pit Fiend? Seems unlikely. Much to ponder. Thanks again.

I'm no expert on this subject. But I've heard from some knowledgable people here that the "pact" between Fzoul and Khelben wasn't a legally binding contract or anything--it was basically a mutual agreement to stay out of each other's way.

Just saying this because I know from experience that it's easy to think of this thing as a "contract" even though that really wasn't what it was.

It is... the last 2e FR supplement, in fact.

I suggest you try paizo.com for a PDF download at just $4US. Or, you could try nobleknight.com for a hard copy version.
