Certainly the Realms are a very high-powered, magic-rich world full of the most powerful beings to grace most campaign settings. My question is, has there ever been an effort to gather a rough estimate of how many epic level characters (canon, of course) dwell in the Realms?

Secondly, there is the matter of the tiny divine powers of FR. I seem to recall someone saying in the WotC forums that there are a great host of local hero deities (ones with a handful of worshippers and a divine rank of 0, in game terms); they even stated that there might be as many as several hundred.

Is this true, or baseless rumor?

I appreciate your comments and criticism; all help in my quest for knowledge.

Well my 2 NPC lists have the stats for the NPCs. If you convert some of the 1e/2e NPCs, they would still be epic level. However, that is still only a sample of high level NPCs.

As for the deity question, that has to be a rumor because there's not that many local hero deities.... Hell, there's hardly any hero deities and most of the local deities are just different names for the deities.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Well, I suppose that if there were so many relatively tiny gods running around all over the Realms, it would be like the Time of Troubles all over again.

Kuje, I trust that I am not the first to appreciate the incredibly detailed lists you've come up with, but let me thank you for the time and effort you undoubtly put into them.

That being said, I don't really need them. I just wanted to know if there was a consensus to the relative number of powerful NPCs in the Realms; it's really just something interesting that I have never come across an answer for. This is idle speculation on my part, but I would guess the number of such people to be around three to five thousand, with perhaps the same to double the number of monstrous (any non-demihuman, in this case)creatures of power.

Does this seem to be reasonably accurate, or am I just a silly person ?

Well, like I said, the NPC's in my lists are only samples and so I doubt ya'll get a specific number like, there's one thousand epic people in the Realms. How would someone be able to judge the "epic" power. With over 6+ million residents on, and below, Faerun, there's no way to get a specific number of "epic" people.

Naturally. I suppose any number a person would come up with is speculation, like the whole 'angels on the head of a pin thing.' I just wanted to see whether other people would come up with the same projection; it's just my curiosity.

At any rate, thanks for answering my questions and providing me with that wonderful NPC list, Kuje. Much obliged.
