After 20 years of roleplaying (Harn, C&S, GURPS, Traveller, you name it) I've finally decided to try D&D. I'm looking at starting a FR campaign using the current rules. I notice that there are a lot of adventure modules around written for earlier editions. Are they easy to adapt to playing with 3.5?
Also, apart from the core rules, I was planing to get the FR setting, and the Player's Guide to Faerūn. Would that be a good starter kit?
Thanks Shane

PGtF is definitely a good buy, but not strictly necessary (look how many years the FRCS was out before they issued it).
As for converting modules... If you are fluent in both 2E and 3E, conversions can almost be handled on the fly. I have however seen 3E DMs try to convert 1-2E modules and walk away mystified. In general, as this is your first time trying D&D I would look at older modules for inspiration and lore sources, but be prepared to build your own adventures from the ground up. |

There is a conversion kit of sorts on the WOTC Website, right? That may help. Still, if your just interested in Adventure Modules, your in luck. FR is getting three this year, first one next month. You can read about them on the Forgotten Realms RPG Products forum.
Players Guide to Faerūn is a good (vital, even) purchase rules wise, but rather lacking in terms of feel for the setting. Might want to look into Races of Faerūn too. Silver Marches, on the other hand, presents a lot of detail about one area of Faerūn, and is quite a good sourcebook. Of course, this all starts to add up money wise! |

Indeed. It was originally given out for free in bookstores and such, but now you can download it from the bottom of this page.
1E and 2E are practically identical, so you can use it for both.
Also, another good free resource is the Revised (v.3.5) System Reference Document.
And, of course, there's some free older Realms material available on the Wizards downloads page. |

Thanks very much for the information - lots to read. I managed to get PGtF and FRCS cheap on ebay. Now I have to get my brain around the core rules - at least the important bits. I suspect that the best way is to start playing :)
The material on the Wizards download page is really helpful, along with the conversion manual.
Thanks
