Just out of curiosity, did they mess it up? I wouldn't know as I am relatively new to DnD and especially new to DL. I bought the campaign setting regardless and I plan to use it regardless, but most of my experience with Dragonlance is through "The Best of Tales" (part 1).
Judging by the piles and piles of DL setting leftover at my gaming shop, and judging by the price redux tags on them (the only item in the store sporting a rebate: the rest of the store sells 10% above listed price), I'm thinking one of two things, or both:
1. They messed it up and the fans aren't buying; and/or
2. They waited too long to offer a gaming product and couldn't convert the novel crowds to start gaming again, DL existing mainly now in the minds of novel readers and not gamers... |

Err... why? GH is the core of all D&D gaming. It has been for the nearly 30 years. You can't just make a statement like that with providing a reasoning. Let's hear it?

Perhaps of all AD&D worlds for 30 years ;-) The known world was not GH after all.
Hmm Mr. Greenwood wrote for the the Known world at least once and odds are more often, perhaps that is why Forgotten Realm was chosen as the name?
Known world of course was Basic D&D that came out a little latter or same time as AD&D. The parent of both of course was Original D&D that needed some fixes. |

I'm no fan of the setting, myself, mainly because it seemed rather patchwork and unplanned. The few novels I read just didn't make me feel the world... And because of all this, I was rather irked to see Greyhawk become the default setting for D&D.
Still, I can't agree with you that it should be banned. Many people over the years have loved that setting, and that puts more bodies at the gaming table, more money into WotC coffers, and thus helps us get more Realms stuff. I may not care for the setting and think it's nothing compared to the Realms, but there's Greyhawk junkies who'd say the same thing about the Realms. And then the Dragginglance junkies would come along and denounce both Toril and Oerth.
Different strokes, and all that. |

I hope you weren't talking about anyone in particular here at Candlekeep, Wooly? . Or rather, I hope I haven't come across in that sense...

Well, no . . . though when you add Dragonlance and Spelljammer and Dark Sun and of course Planescape all together . . . . Not to mention this "d20 Modern" and "d20 Future" and some kind of psionics campaign world . . . .
