If you look at the big old map we all know and love of Faerun, and see Kara Tur on the right, spot the edge of Maztica on the left..
what is below to the South where on the bottom of the map, it just says something like " New lands"
Any info written on that land..anything written on land NEAR that land?
Lands south of Sempadan Forest....

Not all of the other landmasses or continents -- besides those already detailed in the FRCS and additional supplements (or in 2e, campaign expansions) -- have been properly detailed or explored. There are 3 to 4 other continents that we know virtually nothing about.
Of course... there's Osse. All we know about the land itself has been revealed in Lady of Poison. Aside from a few obvious examples in the book, I wouldn't say that Osse is a direct translation of, or heavily influenced by, Australian Aborigine culture -- Gunggari's mannerisms aside (as well as his dizheri), the supposed "ways" of the Osse people could very well be associated with many other examples of Polynesian tribal cultures.
And as I've always said, I have felt that the actual name "Osse" was a bit of a joke as a matter of fact...

if you go south of the Golden Lands / Semphar there is the greatest mountain range known on all of Toril, the Yehmals (sp?) which block the pennesula to Zakhara
South of Zakhara is the Crowded Sea, where there are 1000's of islands...and further south than that is open ocean, to the south pole
even on the (scholar's sketch) toril world map in the 3.0 FRCS hardcover there is no landmass marked covering the south pole, so one has to assume it is a polar ice cap (like Earth's north pole)
The "unknown continent" south of maztica is the unofficial "African" continent (which is discussed in another scroll |

There must be land near the bottom of the world of the Realms! It would'nt make sense if there is'nt. I say authors step in and challange the north-centric idea that land HAS to exist only on the NORTHERN side of the poles.
Is this not Realmslore???? WHY must the geography of the Aber-Toril be similar to real planet Earth??? Its time for change!!! |

Zakhara is actually the official campaign setting of the 2E Al¡¦Qadim RPG
Al'Qadim is the Arabian D&D RPG system (e.g. Sinbad and Aladdin) just as the oriental hardcover book in 1E was, and just like the 1E Oriental Adventures the official campaign world for Al'Qadim was chosen to be a continent in Toril (the Forgotten Realms)
It has a number of supplements, more canon than Kara-Tur and Maztica combined...but it wasn¡¦t a huge success and only had a small following (though IMO, it was very well done)

Yeah not my edit of previous post, I remembered where I'd heard the name before.
I have all those you mentioned in the resource list. and I agree 100%, it wasvery well done..
I just wish more people took to the realm.
But it fits where it belongs on the map, next to the Forgoten Realms.. cause...I forgot about it... lol |

You can find Caravans and Corsairs of the Great Sea at the older editions download section (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads) of the WotC website (scroll down a bit).
Al Qadim was indeed very well done. When I next run a Faerun campaign, I'll certainly give my players the chance to visit Zakhara, land of powerful genies and golden sand...

I definitely agree that Faerun resembles the real world WAY too much in terms of geography and cultures (I always hated Maztica... always thought it felt so out of place).
@ OP: As for tossing away your 2nd edition mind, I'd urge you to reconsider, at least as far as campaign settings are considered. The Forgotten Realms are nice, but they're not the ONLY nice campaign setting out there! There are other campaign settings equally interesting and/or challenging to play in.

Which would be an inaccurate view, if we're talking about the central Realms themselves and not the various 2e campaign expansions like Maztica and Kara-Tur. I would suggest you take this opportunity to read through Ed's April '06 replies. He provides some rather intriguing thoughts on the matter of Realms creation and inspiration.
