Bhaalspawn material for FR is the novels that are based on the games, plus some Dragon articles, and bits and pieces of mentions in 2e and 3/3.5e material. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Just to expand a little on Kuje's initial response...

And yes, before anyone asks, the novels are canon -- so says WotC and the authors of the novels.
The characters from the novels were stat’d up in DRAGON #262 for 2e and there is the Bhaalspawn template for 3e in DRAGON #288. There is also the sourcebook Ed wrote that complements the novels -- Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II. And the bits in PoF and LEoF.

I have to ask...what do you mean by "greater bhaalspawn"?

Not really...it's more complicated than that. Just play the game--it's more fun to play than to discuss it. |

Like I said...it's really a lot more complicated than that. I don't recall the term "Greater Bhaalspawn" ever being used in either the books or the games.

I've played all the BG games many times over. I personally think it's better to just experience the story as a whole rather than read the endings out of context. Just my humble opinion. |

I have played the games as well, and I have to say, I feel the same way. It is so much different to play it than to read the story. Reading the book I couln't stop thinking that they only wrote it to include the game story in canon. Such a lame reason really......... (this is not ment to discredit the author in any way....by the way) |

1: Most of the Bhaalspawn died during the series
2: Sort of, unlike Highlander a Bhaalspawn doesnt gain any power when he kills another Bhaalspawn however the whole idea is that when all the Bhaalspawn die there essense is returned to Bhaal and hes resurrected (its sort of similar to what happaned to Bane with this Banelichs)
As for the BG series being Cannon... I define Cannon as being reflected in FR Rpg source books and presently Bhaalspawn are a mixed bag on that count. BhaalSPAWN have been mentioned on the RPG side of things (They get a brief mention in Lost Empires of Faerun. The Bhaalspawn SAGA (Ie the events that the character plays through in the BG series) is a mixed bag some events are hinted at and some are not the biggest problem is that several events in the BG series arent referenced in the FRC the most significantone being the Razing of Saradash by the Fire Giant Bhaalspawn in BG2 Throne of Bhaal
One of the Bioware guys did a Bhaalspawn template in Dragon magazine (Forget which issue) and basicly it worked alot like the Half Fiend template in that you got more abilities out of the higher your class level |

I disagree. The events of the Bhaalspawn saga as depicted in the novels aren't really a mixed bag. We also have an entire sourcebook dedicted to the novels -- Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II -- as well as the reference in PoF, along with those you and I have already mentioned. As well, as I've said before... WotC lists them as taking place in 1368 DR and 1369 DR. Jim Butler has also told us the events are canon in 2000 on the FR Mailing List. And finally, Rich Baker, Ed Greenwood and Ed Bonny have all confirmed this as well. For me, that grounds the novels into the firm bedrock of Realms canon.

The events of the game aren't referenced in FR canon, as the author, Drew Karpyshyn says, "because of their multiple endings, the BG games can't be considered 'official' in the FR world."

DRAGON #288, as I said above.

The game has different endings, depending on the player's choices:
1) The player chooses to absorb all the essence from all the Bhaalspawns and uses the power to become a good god.
2) The player chooses to absorb all the essence from all the Bhaalspawns and uses the power to become an evil god.
3) The player gives up his essence, and all the Bhaalspawn essence is safely stored away by the powers that be, where it won't be used.
In a nutshell, all the other Bhaalspawn are either dead or they have chosen to give up their essence. In other words, a few are still alive, but they're powerless now.
I never read the novel, so I have no idea if the canon ending is similar. |

I wouldn't say that giving up "the essence" makes one powerless per se.
As for the novel, at the end the protagonist does choose to remain a mortal.
As for canon vs. not-canon, come on (this is directed towards everyone). Aren't there more important things in life to argue about? The issue has been settled--let's move on. |
