You must have gotten the 1e or 2e box set and the laments are used to figure out how far PC's/NPC's have traveled in a day/hour/month/year/etc. There should be some text in the books about it, keep reading. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the maps for the Castles accessory available for free download at WotC?

| Several years ago, I was in the same boat. I had read all of these great novels and wanted to learn more. I advise that you do like I did and go to your local gaming store and start talking to people. Ours has a bulletin board where prospective players or groups can post notices seeking other gamers. The best way to learn the Realms, in my opinion, is to immerse yourself in them. Find a Realms group, play in their game, and experience it. There's no other way to learn. |

And that's why it's always a good idea to memorise the product codes of various FR products.
Thanks Faraer.

I feel, the best map to get is the old 1E super-poster Waterdeep Trail Map and it you can the Kara-Tur Trail Map... |

I found the Kara-Tur Trail Map at a not-so-friendly game/comic store years ago, long before I was really into the Realms. I picked it up on a whim, thank Lurue. The Waterdeep Trail Map proved much more difficult to find, and I got ripped off once before I finally got it. |

thats ironic..I found my Kara-tur map in a prissy old used bok store that would have been to good to have a copy of LoTR, let alone a D&D acessory |

As far as I know, Neverwinter has never had a map printed for it in any FR material.

Indeed, the Lady K is correct.
The Neverwinter entry VGttN tells us why no maps of Neverwinter have ever been printed.
Note to self: take VGttN to read next time. |

I'll quote the reason here, for easy reference:-
quote: Originally published in Volo's Guide to the North, pg. 131
Nasher doesn't allow maps of the city to be made (hence the lack of one in these pages). This is to keep the spies of Luskan busy and add a minor measure of difficulty to any Luskanite invasion plans.

| At least it is another reason than the one for Ank Morpork...Neverwinter does not burn down every other month or so and hence people don't bother to draw maps. |

But there is a map of Ankh-Morpork. I've got it on my wall. Drawn by real dwarven artisans and publsihed C.M.O.T Dibbler. |
There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist. Terry Pratchett |

Do you have a copy of Lost Empires of Faerūn? The map included inside provides some idea of the area Netheril once occupied during the Shadowed Age (-626 DR).
As well, the section on "Netheril" in LEoF, as well as the Netheril: Empires of Magic boxed set [available as a free PDF download at WotC], provide regional details on the areas of the Realms that the Netherese once held under their dominion.

Netheril was located where the great dessert Anauroch is now located. You can go to the Wizards Download page and under the Old Edition Downloads you can get the Netheril - Empire of Magic box set for free that will tell you all about the location and more.
EDIT: D'oh Sage beat me to it. [:D} |
Turox Antas Dragonslayer - "People will believe anything they want to believe, or fear to believe." Wizard's First Rule: Chapter 36, Page #397, US Hard Cover (revealed by Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander). Explanation by Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander: "People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. Peoples heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
