Hails to all!
Recently, my game's PCs wished to access a library/maphouse maintained by a priest of Deneir and were required to solve this puzzle. I thought that other DMs might find it useful:
Five elf nobles each had a crown composed solely of gemstones.
The moon elf once asked the elf with the sapphire crown if she would go hunting with him.
The duke thought that his ruby crown was much more impressive than the emerald crown of the noble who was not a sun elf.
Neither the wild elf nor the wood elf like diamonds nor rubies.
The elf king, the elf with the diamond crown, the count and the wood elf are enemies of the dark elf.
The sun elf once desired either a pearl crown or a crown like the moon elf but decided that the gems were not appropriate for a queen.
The duke once told the baroness that the wild elf would be a better king.
What gems did each noble use in their crowns?

These crowns you're talking about reminded me of the Fusion ring by Georg Jensen which has been made famous in recent years. The ring is made of interlocking puzzle pieces, solid gold/silver/copper or a combination of each. I can't imagine gems of the listed types growing that large to be a crown besides the fact that you said composed of of plural gemstones and only gemstones. Without using a base metal to which the gemstones are applied, the only way I could think of something like this was ina interlocking pattern like the Jensen rings.
I have a link to a foreign site with a picture of what I'm talking about: http://www.birkegaard.dk/Resources/gj_fusion_brill_finger.jpg Sorry if this seems a little off topic. |

So I went back and actually tried to solve the riddle... Am I just really dumb or is there a flaw. Highlight to spoil/read.
I deduced that there is: a Moon Elf King wearing a Diamond crown a Sun Elf Queen wearing a Sapphire crown a Dark Elf Duke wearing a Ruby Crown and I know that: the Baroness is a Wood Elf and the Count is a Wild Elf
I can't figure out what gems the last two wear. To me it seems they could be either Pearl or Emerald. I know that they both aren't Ruby or Diamond and that Sapphire is taken... but after reading through it several times I couldn't find a solid piece of evidence that suggests which is which.
oh and I never liked the idea of Pearl being a gem... its not! I prefer to switch it to topaz or some other real gem (this is the kind of thing that bugs you when you used to be a fashion major).

Considering the potential for confusion, the clue:
"The elf king, the elf with the diamond crown, the count and the wood elf are enemies of the dark elf."
could be rewritten as:
"The elf king, the count, the wood elf and the elf with the diamond crown are enemies of the dark elf."
I hope that helps.

thats what i got maybe you could edit this so that the spoiler is beige or edit it so that the lines between "spoiler" and the answer are marked. Marking the lines helps people see that the space isnt 'beiged' text. I thought for example that you hid the text and went on to read the rest of what you wrote, and i would have been disappointed if I didn't already work on the riddle. Also there is a difference between dark elf and drow I'm just being pesky. |

This is what I came up with, I don't do these even when I'm playing as it never seems there is enough information provided. So I just let others figure it out or figure out a way to go around or destroy and continue on. (Answers hidden below)
Moon= (Pearl why else wouldn't a MOON elf use something that looks like a moon) Wild= Emerald ( Wild lives in forest so GREEN) Dark= Ruby (Just a guess really) Sun= Diamond (Just a guess as well but Diamonds are at the top and so are Sun elfs) Wood= Sapphire (Wood lives in forest so Yellow and BLUE! make GREEN)
Puzzles are for the smart people of the group not the barbarian (And I'm not talking about characters in the game )

At the top of the page there is a link called 'Reply to topic'. Hitting that link will bring you to another screen where you can do all the formatting you want to.
You can make it in regular
Or in beige so it's hidden: <--highlight this line
Or lots of other fun things to do including smileys |

mmmhh..
Isn't there a flaw then? I'm puzzled
See solution:
1.emerald-moon-king 2.sapphire-wood-baroness 3.diamond-sun-queen 4.ruby-dark-duke 5.pearl-wild-count
Actually, with logic I found the same solution only for lines above number 1. 3. and 4. About lines number 2. and 5. I'm stuck here:
See where I'm stuck:
2.wood-baroness 5.wild-count There's no hint to attribute pearl or sapphire crowns to one or the other.
Any hint I missed?
Thanks. Wizbane

Wizbane, I've dispatched a private message explaining a hint. One of my players is still working on this puzzle so don't feel bad.
Thanks again to all for working on it!

Ohh...let's see in how many ways I can show my low IQ.
A Thief was to be sentenced, and the "judge" Tyr priest told him, "You may make a statement. If it is true, I'll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I'll sentence you to six years in prison." After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say?
Answer: "I'm a liar!"

Answer: The first 5 are true
Did I win something?

What did the man say? He said, "You'll sentence me to six years in prison." If it was true, then the judge would have to make it false by sentencing him to four years. If it was false, then he would have to give him six years, which would make it true. Rather than contradict his own word, the judge set the man free.
And yes the answer of the second one is number 9 |

1. What is the man's name While walking down the street I met a man. He tipped his hat and drew his cane and in this riddle I told his name. What is the man's name?
2. What word am I I am eight letters long - "12345678" My 1234 is an atmospheric condition. My 34567 supports a plant. My 4567 is to appropriate. My 45 is a friendly thank-you. My 678 is a name.
Q: What word am I?
3. The fake coin In front of you, there are 9 coins. They all look absolutely identical, but one of the coins is fake. However, you know that the fake coin is lighter than the rest, and in front of you is a balance scale. What is the least number of weighings you can use to find the counterfeit coin? |

Answer to Riddle 3:
Highlight:
2 weighings.
first I divide the 9 coins into 3 piles of 3 coins each. than I put two piles on the balance scale (weighing #1). If the scales tips to one side I Know that the lighter sides plie must include the fake coin. If it balances itself the fake coin is in the last pile, which is not on the scale. I than take the pile which includes the fake coin and put one coin of that pile on each side of the scale, leaving tha last one infront of me (weighing # 2). Again if the scale tilts to one side I know that the lighter side must hold the fake coin. If the scale balances out evenly, the fake coin is the one infront of me, not one the scale.

Edit note:
Riddle 1 & 2 are very difficult for me as being not a native speaker. I'll try anyway - but later. |
