So, i read faces of deception, one of the lost empires books, and i loved it. It was one of the first books where the good guys didn't neccesarily win, where not everything was tied up nicely and really had an impact and left me pondering, yes pondering, for a long time. Is there anything else, aside from the double diamond triangle series (which are a pain to find), that deals with the utter east?

There's no other novels that I can recall and there's only bits and pieces of lore about the place in a smattering of different sourcebooks.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I could be wrong but isn't the Faces of Deception almost in the Kara-Tur/Hordelands area while the Double Diamond Triangle series in that unmarked area where Zakhara and Faerun meet?

I don't know anything about the two regions you mentioned, so maybe. Are there any novels featuring the regions you mentioned, aside from horselords?

sorry fmacdonald...the Hordelands are the mongolia part of the Realms, it's the setting for the first novel of the Empires trilogy...Kara-Tur is the oriental part of the Realms, it was the the setting for the 2nd novel in the Empires Trilogy...

my old memory tells me that the DDT series is in another place...a region of the Realms where there is no info for, even RPG info..

and I have 3 DDT booklets left to collect

The Utter East is across the sea, to the east, from the Shining South part of Faerun. You can barely make it out on the map in the 3.5e Shining South sourcebook.

So it's southwest by south by west of the Hordelands and Kara-tur, depending on which part of Kara-tur you are looking at.

Not entirely...

Faces of Deception tended toward both Erlkazar to Kara-Tur.

If I remember correctly, the characters move quickly through the Utter East and into Kara-Tur. It's a good novel, but not one where you'll learn alot about the Utter East.

If I´m not completely mistaken (it has been quite a while since I read it) Once around the realms might have a short part dealing with this region...but of course that IS a book on Volo, so most of it tends purely to the humourous side.

Faces of Deception began in Erlkazar and traveled to the Utter East, which is located just north of Zakhara in that wedge of land that seperates Faerun, Zakhara, and Kara Tur. The Utter East, however, was on the W portion of that bit of land and clearly more influenced by Faerun than the other contintinents. It most definitely did not end up in Kara Tur.

The only places to discuss the Utter East were Faces of the Deception and the apocryphal (ie not canon) Double Diamond saga. There was an old video game that was ostensibly set in the Utter East, but as I was told, aside from having the D&D brand on it, had nothing recognizably D&D or FR about it.

HORSELORDS is set in the Endless Waste. It sets up the whole Tuigan invasion, which was round about 1360 if I remember correctly.

Don Bassingthwaite had a short story set in the Endless Waste in one of the more recent anthologies. Can't remember the name of it though. Good story!

FROSTFELL (due out in December) is set exclusively in the Endless Waste. It's set in 1374.

The current issue of DRAGON (the one hitting the shelves any day) has a very nice article about current goings-on in the Endless Waste. Some cool art too!

I recently read Faces of Deception and it does place the Utter East on the land bridge that connects Zakhara to both Faerun and Kara-Tur. The realm visited is Edenvale, which faces west towards The Great Sea. It mentions Five kingdoms, but only one other is named (Konigsheim). I'd presume that Ulgarth is likely one of them as well, which is on the eastern shore of the Golden Water, across from Var the Golden, Durpar and Eastagund.

I just wish the book had included a map of the region in it!

Ulgarth is not one of the Five Kingdoms.

In fact, Candlekeep has the map of the region in its map room here: http://www.candlekeep.com/downloads/uttereast.jpg. They are Parsanic, Eldrinpar, Konigheim, and Edenvar. The fifth kingdom as I recall is the mystical kingdom from the novels and thus not pictured on the map. It is not, however, Ulgarth.

If I recall correctly it was/is called Langdarma.

Cheers!

Faces of Deception takes place primarily in the Yehimal mountain range east of Edenvale. I consider the Yehimals to be part of Kara-Tur (the western border of the nation of Tabot) and not part of the Utter East.

Langdarma is a lost valley nestled deep within the Yehimals (closer to Tabot than Edenvale). It is not one of the Five Kingdoms of the Utter East.

Ah, it's been years that I read it thanks for the correction.
And my apologies for a misleading answer.

Cheers!
