I've ordered the Twilight Tomb adventure and I was going to try and get togther some general source for Aglarond and Yuirwood. Could someone help me out
So far on the list is - Unapproachable east, the mythal novel series and I guess the adventure itself. Was there anything good in the 2e source or maybe any of the dungeon/dragon articles? I'm particularily interested in the Sunglade dungeon

what I can think of :
the 2E box set Spellbound: The Realms of Thay, Aglarond and Rashemen
the 1E module Dreams of the Red Wizards
the old novel The Simbuls Gift (Nobles series) may have info too |

The 1e and 2e campaign box sets as well as the FRCS. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Also, Red Magic, for some tidbits about Thay's relationship with Aglarond.
The Yellow Silk contains a few notes on the early years of Aglarond.
Pirates of the Fallen Stars and Sea of Fallen Stars as well.
Wizards and Rogues of the Realms and Warriors and Priests of the Realms also.

All you are really going to need to run the adventure is the FRCS, UE, and the adventure module itself. Reading all of those novels is going to be a general waste of time with regard to running a 32 page adventure, and of them only 1 (Farthest Reach) actually deals with Star Elves and Sildëyuir.
As for the Sunglade as a dungeon, I don't believe it was never referred to as a dungeon until Unapproachable East.
The only thing Spellbound really has that Unapproachable East doesnt is the information for a few smaller cities (like Halendos Village, Findar, Dhast, etc), a map of Velprintalar, and a score of NPCs who were completely ignored in the 3E transition (Brenna Graycloak, Lady Donya Silver, Trovar Halaern, etc). While these things are useful, they are not exceptionally necessary for an adventure in the Yuirwood. |

I disagree.
Prism originally asked for lore on Aglarond and the Yuirwood. In terms of completeness, and running the adventure with as much background information as possible (in case the DM would like to expand on parts of the module or introduce new elements he/she has learned about from the extensive background lore) will only enhance the campaign itself.
As I see it, the other sources and novels listed are completely worthwhile in this regard.

All these sources are of interest, but there are some mercantile considerations that go back to the 1st edition dreams of the red wizards that you should consider when doing an Aglarondan campaign. They mention this in all later books, but they don't really show the emphasis. First, Aglarond's weather patterns are not exactly perfect for growing crops, because the red wizards are constantly messing with the weather. According to popular theory in 3rd edition, most of this excess weather mess focuses in Ashanath (though there are some other earlier lore bits I remember reading hinting that these weather patterns may be due to something entrapped there). However, it should be stressed that this is MOST of the weather patterns. The Rashemi combat this influence with their own magic, as does Mulhorand. Aglarond and Thesk, however are not strongly magically inclined countries (Aglarond specifically has little trust in wizards... the Simbul being an exception), so therefore, they should bear the large brunt of this. Consequently, Thay has a large amount of crops to sell, and they sell them cheaper than surrounding countries. Even though they are enemies, Aglarond buys much of its crops from Thay (kind of like the US needing oil from countries whose inhabitants we normally wouldn't get involved with). Secondarily, Thay needs slaves. The vast majority of the slaves they get are likely prisoners that are sold to slave traders rather than having them put to death because they don't want to continue feeding them (yes, its an unsavory practice in modern standards... but the realms ain't modern day). However, its not uncommon for Thayan wizards to want to "field test" some new kind of regiment (another strain of orcs, perhaps, or a new golem), and Aglarond is the perfect testing grounds. The Simbul is powerful, and she is able to gather her forces to turn back major incursions, but these smaller raids often produce admirable results in the form of captured slaves. |

I've got the adventure now and although it would play just fine without any extra source. I'm planning on starting the adventure at 1st level in Halendos Village (thanks to those recommending Spellbound). The background info will help build up a picture of the local area. Twilight Tomb is for 3rd level characters so I'll add in a small intro adventure to get 5 PC's to about mid point of 2nd.
To be honest the novels just interested me in general and seemed to be rated on amazon, so I bought them anyway |
