My character in one of the campaigns I'm playing in is a level 4 Paladin of Tyr, who spends most of his time fighting from the back of his horse. He's had this horse since childhood, and they've learnt to fight together.

When he reaches level 5 he'll be able to get a special mount. Rather than being granted the ability to summon a new one, I think it would be great if he could find some way of blessing his current horse, so that it has a home on Tyr's home plane (to be summoned from) and so that he could continue fighting with his friend.

Can anyone suggest any rituals etc for turning an ordinary mount into a special mount please?

Thanks

it's not a ritual per say...have the paladin's faithful horse slain () and then at 5th Lv he can summon the celestial version from Tyr's realm

Err having a gorse since childhood, will tend to indicate that the horse is aging. If you do not like the idea offered of killing it, put the horse out to pasture. The horse is past its prime and should be slowing down because of age.

As for a ritual, I do not believe there is any canon on how to do this. I could offer a few ideas that revolve aout asking Tyr to acept aging friend into his realm to be summonable for your character. Perhaps Tyr will even bring horse to prime of its life.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

Loose brainstorming on the subjekt.

Some sort of ritual joining the holy power of Tyr with the essence of the horse spirits cleansing it and giving it back its youth. Maybe even linking the paladin and horses life power so that their lives are tied together. This could of course be used as an excuse to give the horse whatever powers a paladins mount should have(I no knowledge of the current edition).

I can see this as a rather simple combination of magics between a priest of Tyr (your own paladin might do) and some sort of nature priest (if you are using the old animal spirits from Eds Dragon article about the pantheon there's always the beat cult of the horse mentioned there)that can contact the spirit of the horse and ask it if it wants to serve Tyr and the Paladin.

I'd like to hear those ideas :). My character is only 21, and has had this horse (a cormyrian war charger) since he was around 10. If horses live until their late twenties then it should still be fit and well :). But thanks for raising the issue, I'd never considered the fact of the horse dying of age (lets see -1 str con dex, +1 int wis..... lol)

From my second hand experience horses are beyond their prime in their early or mid teens, if your character owned the horse since he was 10, the horse will probably have been about 2-3 years old when he got it. This would make the horse 13-14 years now. I'd have to check with my sister who is a professional horseback rider to confirm the dates, but I doubt I'm too far off with my statement. A celestial version of the horse is an option, but keeping the horse would not be much joy for either paladin or horse since the charger will reach an age soon where it won't be of much use in battle.

The image of the aging paladin on his aging warhorse is a cool one, but at 26, the time when the horse might even be too old for decent sausage, your paladin is hardly aging.

Funny you should mention that. Our party tends to have a resentment of anyone who keeps an animal, and frequently offer to eat one of the druids many pets lol.

Thanks for the info about horse ages, with his faithful mount starting to show signs of aging (and him about to reach level five in a few weeks game time I imagine), now would seem the perfect time to petition Tyr to take his horse so that he might serve them both longer.

Hmmm...here is an idea, tho you might wanna check with your DM:

maybe the special mount paladin thingy could be interpreted as Tyr infusing a minor celestial spirit into the horse's soul. I dunno if that counts as celestial. The general idea would be that it remains the same horse, only with a twist...

Could you have it that your character is begining to wonder why his horse hasn't aged? This could lead to your PC's current horse becoming his mount when he reaches fifth level. This could be used by your PC as proof that Tyr has marked him out for a special destiny.

Have the horse blessed in some manner so that when he passes ( as he seems fairly old already), it's spirit would reside on Tyr's home plane.

Then have a magical statue, that replicates your favorite steed created, that is linked in some manner to your horses spirit. this would allow you to call on the horse to return when needed.

A blessed form of the stone horse used by the paladin in the pools trilogy.
