Interesting, but I wish there was at least a cover. :-/ |

I'm somewhat surprised that there's no cover art posted, yet. I've had a JPG of the cover for several months, now. I'll query my editor about this and see if it's permissible for me to make the cover public. He may tell me to hold off until WotC makes the book "official" (ie, it shows up in their catalog and on their website), but when I get the thumbs-up, I'll get it visible somewhere.

Since you're in this thread, and it's been awhile since we've heard from you, can you fill us in on additional details about the book. Like where it's set? What's it gonna be about (without spoiling too much)? How's the writing progress on the series? etc. |

Hey, folks.
I was told to stay mum on the book for a little while longer, until the WotC catalog comes out in another month or so. Very sorry, but you'll have to be patient.
And "ie" or (more appropriately, i.e.) stands for id est, which is latin for "that is." It basically means "that is to say," or "in other words," introducing what follows it (usually in parentheses).

Thomas,
I am so looking forward to this Novel. What with your penchant for improving charcaters (i.e. Insurrection's Jeggred and especially valas Hune), I am eager to see what you do with Steven Schend's "babies", Kaanyr Vhok and Aliisza. I am sure that Steven need not lose any sleep, you will make him a proud Papa.
I know we are probably too far out for May 8, '07 for a teaser, but hey I gotta ask.
Does Allisza's little trinket she aqquired at the end of WotSQ play any role? I just feel she invested too much into finding a piece of "he who shall remain nameless " , to keep it as a memento. Seems more fitting for a resurrection for her plaything? (or can she bind his spirit to her?) But, who am I to decipher the mind of a woman, let alone an Alufiend woman! Ok, enough with the prying.
Can you tell us what stage you are in? Submitted and waiting for revisions or??
Any more info on this mysterious cover art??
Lastly thanks for the latin refresher.
I hope you novel lives up to this little Wonkaism "fax mentis incendium gloriae"
Feel free to obfuscate on any or all questions!
edit: I think my +3 keyboard of grammar needs recharged! |

It's set to be released May 2007 and is part of the Empyrean Odyssey (trilogy?)

I turned over the final revisions to the editor this past Tuesday. I will probably see galleys in December.

The only thing I can tell you is that it exists, I think it rocks, and I can't show it to you yet. When the next WotC catalog comes out, I'll make sure everyone sees it.

If it's that good, it's worth waiting for!
Can anyone tell me if "Gossamer Plains" has any meaning that I would have missed by not having read any source books, or is it new?
Thanks! |

I can't wait. Vok and Aliza are interesting characters to explore. |

Aye, it is. :) Or in FR's new planes, it's a mountain in the plane called the House of the Triad. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Looks like a very nice cover, i'm looking forward to reading something set on the other planes, strange things can happen, which makes for good twists on the normal stories. |

Splendid news! Please return and tell us what ye think, [and please post the FBS link to your thoughts once there is one, Damon.]
Reading over the Cosmology of Abeir-Toril section in the Player's Guide to Faerun the other day, it was brought home to me how much I'm looking forward to this novel. I used to be quite unhealthily obsessed with the Outer Plains, and glancing over them again reminded me what rich, outlandish source material Mr. Reid has to work with in this trilogy, (if it is truly an "epic journey across the plains of existence", as WotC's product calendar says.) The characters are a big draw too, of course; I found Kaanyr Vhok and Aliisza to be among the more likable entities in WotSQ. One thing I note particularly about both of them: While they're nasty mercenary characters concerned with their own gain above all else, they've never really done anything to make me hate or resent them. They're evil, yes, but "agreeable evil", if that's not an oxymoron, and I think that Mr. Reid's initial portrayal of them in "Insurrection" went far toward establishing this.
Not to derail this thread, but is it my imagination or is WotC starting to exploit the on-line review sphere, and the buzz generated by the distribution of advance reading copies, more than they used to? If so, glad to see it happening. Also, very happy to see great places like Fantasy Book Spot taking an interest in the Realms.

Just thought people might like to know that the sample chapter for "The Gossamer Plain" has recently been posted on the novel's product page over at wizards.com. Interesting stuff.
The mildest of spoilers: # # # #
There's a celestial character introduced in this excerpt who I think I could grow to like. Tauran seems fully devoted to the cause of Tyr without being dangerously fanatical, and several of the things he says and does in this chapter, [such as his inwardly acknowledged desire for challenge], seem to indicate that there's a lot to this character. Eagerly awaiting the book's release in May.
