I just finished reading the Hordes of the Abyss and became interested in the Kiaransalee/Orcus conflict. I know that the generic D&D material often conflicts with Realms information on the planes. So, I checked both Faiths and Pantheons and PGtF for information about the conflict between Kiaransalee/Orcus. According to the Realms information Orcus is dead and Kiaransalee rules Thanatos. Has Orcus recently retaken the plane from her, or is this just one of those differences between the planes in generic D&D and Realms?

Actually Orcus returned to FR in 2nd edition because of Demihuman Deities, which referenced Planescapes' Great Modron March and Dead Gods.
During 2e, all, or most, of the D&D settings were connected via Planescape and so he returned at that time. Faiths & Pantheons, near the back of the book, says that he is a deity. Unapproachable East has a cleric of him. The Player's Guide says that his layer is in the Abyss and Kiar's is in the the plane of the Demonweb Pits. Hordes of the Abyss doesn't conflict with most of the lore about Orcus and her, except that Erik Mona kept the 1e/2e cosmology, while he ignored FR's 3/3.5e cosmology. The Book of Vile Darkness also discusses his return and the NPC that was originally in Dead Gods. 3E's Manual of the Planes also discusses these events and so does, partly, 2e's The Bloodstone Lands sourcebook.
So to answer your question, even in FR lore, Orcus took back his layer and Kiar moved to Lloth's plane or whatever realm she is in in Hordes. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Yeah, and in Demi-Human Deities it discusses one of Kiaransalee's cult groups beneath Damara that were trying to hunt down the vestiges of Tenebrous. |
