In my Menzoberranzan campaign that is fast approaching one of my players wants to play a duergar. Normally that would not be a problem but I am setting this campaign a few years after the War of The Spider Queen. Now considering that the duergar from Graklystugh (sp?) just invaded the city I told him his reception will be less than warm (even considering it's a drow city). I told him to expect outright slights at every turn, extreme mark up on items provided by drow merchants and of course many attempts on his life. To my thinking might the Council even ban the dark dwarves from the city? I don't like to limit my players (especially since duergar are a main Underdark race) but I want him to be able to enjoy his character as well. Is there any angles I haven't thought of? Would you handle this situation any differently? These are my questions to you guys who have been an immense help in building this campaign up. Thanks Again

I think the drow would love to ban the duergar except for the fact the gray dwarves smith the best weapons and armour in the Underdark (or atleats the only race of good smiths that will trade with drow). I'm sure Menzoberranzan has declared war on the dwarves but with greater enemies like Mithral Hall, the Scoured Legion, rival drow cities and the newly-released phaerimm, not to forget the local mindflayers, beholders, cloakers and whatnot populations, they still need that weapons trade.
- depending on your campaign, the deurgar PC may have something the other PCs need, thus he has to tag along - as a diplomatic envoy from another gray dwarf outpost/kingdom - a secret envoy from Graklystugh (sp?) that is still dealing with a specific house - simple hired merc. - as a valued servant/slave to another PC that was around before the war

I would say, while the drow of the city aren't likely to love the little guy, if he doesn't run around proclaiming the glories of Gracklstug and pronouncing his allegiance to said city, he would likely be tolerated. Not liked, but then again, drow consider themselves superior to everyone, so there should only be a bit of difference between how a duergar is treated and how any other "lesser race" would be treated. But that is just my guess. |

In the aftermath of the War of the Spider Queen I believe that the city of Menzo is in dire need to build up its strenght as a merchant city. After all - money rules the world and also the underdark. Therefore the dark elfes would not mind having a duergar in the city. Piut him in a merchant background and all is set.... that's how I would do it. |

Hey, he could be the child of a duergar from Gracklestugh that was spying for the drow, and his parents were executed and the PC exiled. |
