Elaine Cunningham's "Wizardwar" trilogy is set in Halruaa and highly recommended.

Murder in Halruaa by Richard Meyers |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

The old FR supplement The Shining South and the new supplement Shining South should hold some lore as well. You might also want to check LEoF for some historical info, since Halruaa was founded by Netherese refugees. |

Do you have the old 2nd. or the new 3rd Ed. Sourcebook "Shining south"? |

And if you can track any of them down (good luck) the old Forgotten Realms comic book featured, as one of its protagonists, a Halruaan wizard, Dwalimor Omen, who is also mentioned briefly in the Shining South sourcebook. |

In my opinion, reading novels that "play" in the area is really the best way to get to "know the land". I liked Murder in Halruaa very much and would recommand it. It gives a good overall impression of Halruaa especially with the special relationship to magic in everday live, as faras I remember. (read the book ages ago though.) I don't think that the information in the 2nd. Ed. Shining South differs all too much from the one given in new Ed. (cannot speak for the other sources mentioned by Sage cause I don't have them.) |

How much of the 3e Shining South covers these 2e books? |

If you're looking for specific lore about how the various types of PCs, fighters-wizards-cleric-and-rogues for example, operate in Halruaa, then yes... they are worth the hassle.

As I said above... the Halruaan entries in those two books I mentioned relate almost specifically to the PC types they are detailing and how those types operate in particular regions of the Realms.
A few tidbits made it into 3e SS as I recall, but the two books themselves are still useful sources on their own.

There are several differences between the 2ed and 3ed Shining South, but I would still say that for someone interested in the region it would be worth it. then again, I prefer the 2ed Shining South, so I am a bit biased. |
