I started the novel yesterday and have been sucked in already! I forgot to post in the first section but now I plowed through up to chapter 6 and don't want to drop any accidental spoilers so I will begin here.
I really have enjoyed the novel up til this point. It jumped right back into the search, where book II left off. The two scenes that have really stood out to me so far are the ice castle and the battle with the (probally going spell it incorrect) the linnorn. I don't have the novel handy right now so I forgot everything I was going to post. Today has been hectic so forgive me |

I'm just finished up to chapter 6 which features the castle, and like you, think it's a great scene
This whole section of the book has a very eerie and strange feel about it. I feel uneasy and fearful whilst reading
Nice bit where Pavel gets it on with Iyraclea... it's not just Ed Greenwood who gets a bit raunchy in his novels now
The battle below the castle with Sammaster was great. I loved also how Iyraclea can meld the ice to her will, creating ramps to decend to the bottom etc.
Those wyrms are great as well, I laughed when that one snapped up a dwarf and chomped it down.... although I shouldn't laugh really
Also made me chuckle when Iyraclea offered to Pavel to see his friends..but he asked for his trousers first |

Whoah, chapter 6 really opened up even more! The battle was crazy! I like now that the party has been split and how those ice wyrms hunted down Dorn, Pavel and Jivex.
I was shocked at what happened to Kara too.... I was sure she was a gonner..looks like it aint over yet though
This novel is one hell of a rollercoast ride! |

Well on into chapter 7...
Nice to see Stival pop up again after his intro in the prologue.
I liked the scene where the Sossrim turned up to find Pavel and company. Jivex was amusing at this point, yet again
The fight with Taegan's part of the band and the dracolich was great. Got a bit edgy when Kara felt the Rage creeping into her! Ooohh
I chuckled after the fight too when Taegan asked Kara if she was ok and Brimstone said "you'll be delighted to know i'm ok too" Brimstone is great!
One little touch that i've noticed which is quite nice, is how Brimstone uses Kara's full name instead of just "Kara".. like a kind of respect between dragons to address each other by their full lengthy names. |

Yes, I fell for it.
Rich did a good job. Since this was the last book in the trilogy, and the characters were introduced here, I had managed to convince myself that maybe Kara did die when the white dragon jumped her. I thought everything had radically shifted here.
I have to say, the tone and pacing of this book feels a lot more (to me at least) like earlier Realms adventures, like, for example, the Finder's Stone trilogy. I like that. The high adventure, not knowing when and where things will pop up, and not getting to see where the party will connect up again. Its keeping me on my toes.
Brimstone has been a great character to keep tension in the piece. I know he wants to screw over Sammaster, yet I keep thinking, "maybe this time he really is betraying the group."
Pavel's encounter with Iyraclea was great, especially the description of him feeling the connection to his god being broken.
Taegan's realization that his people defended the elven fortress at great cost was an awesome, yet fairly subtle point. It was great, as was his introspection while he was hovering "in between" in the portal.
As emotionally scarred as Dorn is, I'm starting to wonder if he really will be alright even if he finds out that Kara is alright, or if the whole situation will make him retreat further, since he knows how much he can be hurt now.
I love Jivex's line, "friend to humans even when they are too thick to realize it." Its fun to see draconic pride mixed with faerie dragon sensibilities as well, as evidenced every time Jivex claims a victory, no matter what part he played in the battle.
Sammaster and Iyraclea's bargain was an interesting thing to witness, and I liked Sammaster's solution to Iyraclea to save face. Sammaster seems to bargain like someone that truly beleives that his plan will come to pass, with an unsettling calm about him. Iyraclea is interesting. Halruuan? I wonder if she actually is gone for good. I know she was fighting a dracolich, but in 300 years she could have come up with a decent contingency or two. I guess we'll find out eventually. |

Loved the book (and the trilogy. I rank it up in the top five trilogies in FR but one thing bothering me greatly:
Iyraclea went down like a snot-nosed acolyte - very disappointing to see epic-level, Chosen NPCs snuffed so easily |

Well, she was fighting a great wyrm white dragon, and there had be a huge battle looming up to that point. I was kind of shocked at her demise, but at the same time, it definately gave some credibility to the dracolich. |
