Do you think it's possible to negotiate a licence from WoTC to translate 1e and 2e FR rulebooks into Russian?
Or to publish them in Russia?
What should be done for that?

What do you think about possibility of re-print for old rulebooks?

Not sure if it could be done, the AD&D rules are licensed to Kenzer&Co for HackMaster. Best to contact Wizards and ask them, or check with Kenzer&Co if you could translate their material.

For older editions, I don't see this happening at all.

I agree. My question would be why?? I see WOTC kicking out too many 3.5E itmes to bother with ANY previous editions. Maybe new regional sourcebooks, which might answer your question.

Yup. Especially since they would incur printing and distribution costs for a product that wouldn't move very well. Sure, Realms fans would eagerly buy some of the stuff... But not all Realms fans would, and other D&D players wouldn't even bother with buying 2E stuff.

I wouldn't buy them since I own almost all of them. And that would be the case for a lot of others as well, which would make WOTC lose more money. :)

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Oh yeah... that'd be me as well.

I picked up each of my 2e FR accessories as they were released... so I wouldn't see myself paying out money to WotC for re-prints of older material.

I'd buy ones I don't have... But that's a small portion of what was put out. Like you two, I got a lot of it as it was coming out.

I switched from DragonLance to the Realms in 97 or so, by that time much of the old stuff was already OOP... my rotten luck, I try to grab what I can, for a reasonable price of course. Downloads don't have much appeal to me as I hate sitting at a comp reading the stuff... give me a sofa, some music and a good reading light anytime.

Still, it would be nice if Wizards managed to update some of the old stuff... like they did with Tomb of Horrors and White Plume Mtn.

Maybe I didn't state it clearly, but I was speaking about publishing books in Russia.
They were not published even in English here. And only a few shops in the biggest cities are selling them. (In Saint-Petersbug, second largest city, there is only one such shop. Even it has too few books for sale).
Only good way to buy them is either from downlods (as I did) or, when visiting your countries.
There are a lot of people still using AD&D 2e in our country. And there is a lot of interesting info in 2e FR rulebooks, that is not repeated in 3e or 3.5
But I must agree with you that it could well be unprofitable. :(

Yours Faithfully, Konstantin aka Eomer

Contact Wizards directly and ask them. The worst they can say is no, which wouldn't change a thing for you.

As for profits... even if they licensed the rights to you to publish the translated books there (which is doubtful), you would have to pay for the license in the first place and then count in the time spent to translate it, pay the printer, market the stuff, and after all these costs you would have to sell the books at a price that people would buy them and you could still pay your mounting bills.
It's easier, cheaper and more useful to learn English IMO.

Sure!
I learned it mostly because of FR and AD&D. And recieved my translators diploma by now.
But there still are people who studied other languages or ones who are bad with any other then native one.

Thanks for advice!

Again,

It's really not profitable for them to do this especially to do this just in one country. I seriously doubt that WOTC would even bother, but you could ask.

I learned English because of Heavy Metal...oh and school ... they forced me

Wel,, they forced me in Germany, in the US I didn't have much of a choice

But, hey, what's to stop you from translating the stuff for home use for your friends? If you want reimbursement for your time spent there, ask them for beer...or cigs...or hell, I dunno. As long as you do not sell the stuff and just do that for your friends and keep the translations at home. *shrug* I translated some F&A items for my friends here, cuz they also know only their native language...despite school forcing them to learn English.
