When someone in Faerūn dies, their soul is usually collected by the primary deity they worship and escorted to that deity's home plane.

But what happens to the spirits of those people who worship one of the demipowers whose home plane is Faerūn/the Prime Material itself, such as Gargauth? There's also the question of what happens to followers of Ulutiu, since his home plane is currently the Astral Plane.

These questions do not have official answers yet.

However, in another thread I remember discussing this very issue of Gargauth's petitioners and the thinking came down to 3 options:
1) perhaps he sends his petitioners to the Nine Hells, to provide troops for the Blood War.
2) perhaps they appear as petitioners on the Material Plane and they staff his realm/castle/pit.. wherever his headquarters are.
3) he may just eat their souls to absorb their essence and add to his strength.

As for Dead Gods, it is not quite clear where their worhippers go. If any god claims that god's name as an alias, then perhaps the alias-claimer can pick up the soul from the Fugue and divert it to the new god's realm.

If the god is dormant or sleeping, as is Ulutiu, then perhaps that god still has a divine Realm that is being maintained by his servants in his absence and thus his petitioners may still go there.

If a god dies, there is a lag time before his divine Realm implodes or slips its ties to the Astral and becomes lost. For so long as the realm is still around, servants of the god may try to carry on as usual and still go to the Fugue to pick up newly deceased worshippers to bring them back to the dying realm.

If the realm is completely imploded, disolved, or "lost" then it has been suggested that the petitioner might be sent to the astral and find himself walking around on the god body/island. I find that pretty unlikely.

Everyone has to go to the Fugue first. Only your patron god or his designated agents can collect you. Devils are allowed to approach you and try to make deals. If your god doesn't come for you, then you are going to get approached continuously by a lot of devils wheeling and dealing and pleading with you to try the Nine Hells.

There is also the chance that demons will kidnap you in one of their periodic raids on the Fugue.

Assuming you don't go to the Abyss or the Hells, you will wander around the Fugue. Dendar might eat you. You might meet up with others who wander the Fugue.

It has also been suggested that with the absence of a divine spark from your god to sustain you in the afterlife, you might naturally start to calcify and turn into an inert pillar on the Fugue Plane.

This may be why Kelemvor stacks the faithless up on the Wall to protect his city. He has to do something with them, otherwise they would be cluttering up the plane. It may be that even in the absence of a judgment from Kelemvor, that souls that wander the Fugue for too long just go inert until such time as they eventually merge with the landscape and become one with the plane.

How can Gargauth`s home plane be the prime material? The avatar of a god is powerful, but still a mere shadow of a god. If Gargauth lives on Faerun does that mean he is walking around in his true form there? He would be insanely strong.

If I were a ranger, I would pick NDA for my favorite enemy

The same question applies to Shaundakul: Faiths & Avatars (2e) states (afaik) that his homeplane is the prime material plane, and that his avatar is often seen in Myth Drannor...

Gray Richardson: thanks for your suggestions .

khorne: Back in second addition, Gwaeron Windstrom, Lurue, the Red Knight and Siamorphe were based in the Prime too .

tauster: Shaundakul's home was Ysgard in F&A - maybe you're thinking of Gwaeron?
