From the foreword to “The Dark Elf Trilogy – Collectors’ Edition” by R.A. Salvatore. (The following conversation is one of the first between Salvatore and Mary Kirchoff, former senior editor of TSR.Inc.)
„No, Bob“, she responded, words I seem to hear too often from editors. “You don’t understand. I’m going into a meeting right now to sell this proposal. I need a sidekick.” “Now?” I, in my never-before-in-the-world-of-publishing naiveté, responded. “Right now”, she answered, rather smugly. And then it happened. I don’t know how. I don’t know why. I merely said, “A drow.” There came a pause, followed by, in a slightly hesitant tone, “A dark elf?” “Yeah”, I said, growing more confident as the character began to take more definite shape in my mind. “A drow ranger.” The pause was longer this time. Then, in barely a whisper, the tremor of having to go and tell this one to the mucky-mucks evident in her tone, she said, “What’s his name?” “Drizzt Do’Urden, of D’aermon N’achezbaernon, Ninth Houth of Menzoberranzan.” “Oh.” Another pause. “Can you spell that?” “Not a chance.” “A drow ranger?” “Yup.” “Drizzit?” she asked. “Drizzt”, I corrected, for the first of 7.3 million times.
The first novel of Drizzt Do’Urden was released 18 years ago in 1988. Since then, various talented artists have been painting a number of pictures featuring the famous dark elf, thus giving Drizzt a face. Now I would like to ask you to decide which painting best meets the vision in our mind. Which painting do we like most? Which is „the face of Drizzt“?
Each of you has got five votes he can cast freely. However, no picture may receive more than one vote from one and the same person, and all your five votes should be cast. Just use this thread to post your five favourite pictures. Every painting has a number attached to it you can indicate when casting your votes. Klicking on the link, you can see all the Drizzt images I chose. As there is such a vast amount of drizzt fanart on the internet, I restricted my choice to the official art only. Should there be an image I didn’t list I apologize for that. I started this survey in a number of message boards (USA and Germany) and I hope for vivid participation :-) This poll ends on 03.31.2006

In order, with the first one being my fave:
15 14 23 22 1
I love Larry Elmore's art... I'm almost willing to buy a new copy of the books to get that cover shown in pic 15. And I didn't realize it was Easley who first gave Drizzt the funky gold forehead-thing! |

Same as Wooly in terms of order
4 3 2 8 19
I like Larry Elmore as an artist and as a person, but his Drizzt looked too 'chubby' to me. Todd Lockwood is getting him closer what I imagine him, however, his art is rarely the calm sort of scene Larry did paint. It would be nice to see a picture of Drizzt without the 'tension'. Sorta take Larry's and Jeff Easley's 'calmer' pics and base it off of that... or something like that.

That's hard!!! I love the 1-4, 7-13, 35, 26 (except that little golden thing on his head). Though my favs are the first four... and pretty much any without that little golden thing....
Okay so I vote (number 4 is my most favorite) 4 2 3 1 35
*nods* those are my favorite five. |

My favorite Drizztes are: 29 10 4 2 1 Those are the ones I picture Drizzt to look like when I read about him. I also agree with everyone about the golden head piece. I hate that thing. And alot of those Drizzt pictures make him look way to old, I mean, he's a slow aging elf for god sake. Why make him look like any day could be his last. I always hated those two things about the Drizzt pictures and after all these years I'm glad to let it all out. |

It is alittle strange to go through all the cover art and see the many faces of Drizzt. His body shape and face has some drastic differences. In 25 he looks old and half elven. I think Lockwood's later art looks most like I imagined him to look. |

While Todd Lockwood definitely understands the overall feel of Drizzt, I think Brom's image of the unshaven dark elf captures his character to perfection. However, Lockwood is the man who best gets him in action. Jeff Easley's pic of him and Gwyn is good! |

Well met
1 31 4 11 22
Number 1 is an excellent all-round image of Drizzt and has a better, darker edge, IMO. 31 takes the crown for being the better defined and dark look for me though. I think both Todd Lockwood and Brom's art are outstanding and a great asset to the Realms as a whole. Picture 4 is a very atmospheric scene and a key scene in Drizzt's life.
Picture 11 also gets my vote as Drizzt's pose is very well done and adds extra atmosphere to the scene.
I've also voted for 22 as this is probably the earliest picture of Drizzt which I felt portrayed him the best. He was done just as i'd imagined when reading about him. |

I'll always like 14. It's not very Drowish, but is the first. 31 is good as well.
I dislike 20 and 25... especially 25. It looks like a dirty old man offering some kids candy if they'll just go skinny dipping in his pool. |

i have never liked any of the images i have seen. i have my own image that i made up in my mind long ago. same with most of the characters that have appear in cover art and other places. i would rather let my mind depict a characters visual appearance than rely on the image another has imagined. |

The original Crystal Shard pic is still my favorite to this day. Its what got me reading the series in the first place. I do like Lockwood's new image for him aswell. |

Cant do anything but love number 17. Shows a character that is serious but not evil and i think it is by far the best so far. 17 14 5 1 23 |

I particularly like 17 and 1. 31 is a really decent drow pic, but it just doesn't resemble Drizzt as I see him. The worst ones, in my opinion, are 20 and 25. |

I really like all pictures done by Todd Lockwood, but I particularly like number 6, it looks like a real photo! In that picture, Drizzt looks as old as he should look and not as old as some of the pictures show him. |

15 is one of my favorites of all time, maybe because its the simpler scimitars, and the not fully girded for battle look, and of course, I like how Catti-brie looks in this one as well.
I like 14 as well, since its the first image I (and I think everyone else) had of Drizzt, though the skin tone is too light.
I like 10, although I think that Lockwood makes Bruenor's equipment look way to complicated in every picture he does of him.
4 is kind of a neat "just gettin to see the surface" picture, and we get a cameo from Mooshie as well.
9 I picked because, well, I know this is about Drizzt, but I love Frost Giants, as well as trolls that don't come across looking too comical, and Lockwood paints the most intimidating orcs this side of Peter Jackson's Uruk-hai. Oh, and Drizzt looks good killing them all, I guess.
And, as a long time Realms curmudgeon, let me say that I hated the short haired Drizzt from the Hall of Heroes, I hated the ancient looking, lets wear a big superfluous metal forehead plate to accentuate my big fluffy sideburns pictures, and even Todd Lockwood, whose art I really like, has given me a new pet peeve. Why do Icingdeath and Twinkle look ANYTHING alike?
