Any reason (other than collecting) to have access to the 1st and/or 2nd editon campaign sets in a 3rd edition FR game (e.g. better maps, or dropped characters, events or locations, stuff like that)?

As I am sure others will tell you, there is more than just the collectors value to the material in the other editions of Forgotten Realms.
Lately I have gone back and purchased City of Splendors box set which has a wealth of information in there, and fantastic maps. Some of the information might be out of date, but is still worth every penny, as not much has changed in Waterdeep, and I learnt lots from it.
The third edition stuff is nice, but you will never beat the 2nd Edition Box Sets, which alas we will never see made again.

If you had to pick the single best resource for humans in the realms, what would it be? Maybe that's too hard to answer, I don't know. My realms knowledge so far comes from Salavatore's books (all of them), the BioWare/Black Isle games (all of them) plus the bits I've read of the RPG stuff I have. |

Humans... that's a huge domain.
There are differents cultures, nations, ...
I'd say Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast, Volo's Guide to BG2
City of Splendors (Waterdeep one of the greatest city)
Calimshan (one of the greatest human empire)
Netheril: empire of magic (a lost empire of human)
....
Well, i can't give you the complete list of the books in relation with humans, be more precise please

I guess what I meant was: if you were stranded on an island with only one human-related source book for FR, what would it be?
I gather, from your answer, that it might be "Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast", since you put that first. That's fair enough and as good an answer as I expected to, as you yourself implied, a complicated question, so thank you for the input.
And you're right, I don't need a list of all the human-related FR sourcebooks. |

An island and only one FR book on humans... hmmm
Anyways, your best shot would probably be the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. There is no real 'racial' product on humans. Humans are everywhere in the Realms. The best way to read about them is to read all... And the best book for that (for a top-level overview) is FRCS. |

Owning all three versions (original grey box, grey box and FRCS), I can understand what you feel, but the first two are more limited in scope while they delve a little deeper into detail.
A matter of preferences I guess... mine would be a mix of both, but to start a campaign I believe the 3e FRCS is a better tool for the DM. |

Yes, I'll use both. The 2e is more detailed (Sembia, for example), as you say. It also has better maps.
Let me ask you, since you own all three, is there a lot of worth in 1e if I have 2e and 3e? |

I don't think owning the first edition while you have the 2nd is very useful.
And remember that the 3rd edition is only two years old, 2nd is much older so no surprise that it is more described! |
