I know there has to be other scrolls here at Candlekeep that answer my question, but the search has turned up scrolls that are marked with spoilers. (For which I cannot thank the scribes here enough.)

My question should be very simple to answer though:

In what books, and in what order should one read the story of Erevis Cale?

Another name for dawn Dragon Magazine #277 (optional)
And All the Sinners Saints Dragon Magazine #297 (optional)
Sembia-series, he is the main character in one of the short stories in Halls of Stormweather, and Shadow's Witness, has a big part in Shattered Mask, and Lord of Stormweather, and appears briefly in the other three.
Erevis Cale-trilogy (1-Twilight Falling, 2-Dawn of Night, and 3-Midnight's Mask)

There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist.

Shadow's Witness, from teh Sembia series.
Twilight Falling, part 1 of the Erevis Cale Trilogy.
Midnight's Mask, part 2 of the Erevis Cale Trilogy.

There's also some short stories featuring him.

Edit: OK, I'm slow.

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

Thanks to both of you.

Were the dragon magazine articles written before the Sembia series?

Jindael,

Here is what I would suggest:

1. "The Halls of Stormweather," Book 1 of Sembia series. HoS is a collection of interrelated novellas. The Cale story is entitled "Resurrection." Lots of other great authors and characters in this, too. You may find your reading list expanding greatly.

2. "Shadow's Witness," Book II of the Sembia series. Now, you do not need to read any of the other subsequent Sembia novels to understand the Erevis Cale Trilogy (which follows, see below) but they are good books and I'd recommend them.

3. "All the Sinners Saints," a short story set in the time between SW and the beginning of the Cale trilogy. Available on WotC site here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=books/fr/allsinnersaints. I don't know how much longer it will be up on the site.

4. "Twilight Falling," book one of the Cale trilogy. I'll point out I've had several readers tell me that they read the Cale trilogy without reading any of the previous books, so I think it must stand alone pretty well. This means you could simply start with the Cale trilogy and skip the previous stuff. I wouldn't, but that is just me.

5. "Dawn of Night," book two of the Cale trilogy.

6. "Midnight's Mask," book three of the Cale trilogy.

And if you're still interested after all that, "The Twilight War" trilogy will be forthcoming. The first book, "Shadowbred," will be released later this year.

Hope that is helpful.

"Another Name for Dawn" was published at the same time as "Shadow's Witness."

"All the Sinners Saints" was published after Shadow's Witness but before Twilight Falling.

Unless the books are horrible, and by horrible I mean it is so bad that my eyes start to boil in my skull, I'll usually finish a series, especially if it's in the Realms.

Because of your warning, I just downloaded the text and saved it to read later. Thanks for the heads up.

I can't start a set of books in the middle. That is the main reason for me asking this question; because I want to know where to really start. I own Twilight Falling, I picked it up with the understanding that there might have been books featuring Cale before it, but my local book store is so small, that it's best to just pick it up when you see it, even if it has to wait a year. And I'm one of those people who will wait until the last book is published before I start the first. Thankfully, this set is out. ^_^

I probably will be. I see that you got the final book in the WotSQ series (finally all out in paperback, so I'm reading them now) and I trust that ending the series is in good hands. Plus, the Cale books have gotten fantastic reviews, so I'm sure I will follow your work in the future.

And this would be the suggested reading order as well? (I normally try and read as they were written, rather than actuall date order though, but I'm just curious.)

While I do know of a couple of things that have been taken down from the WotC site, it's not something they do often... I'd recommend copying the story to your hard drive just to have it, but I'd not worry about it being taken down any time soon -- heck, Ed's short story How Wisdom Came to the Maimed Wizard remains available on the WotC site, despite being republished in the Best of Eddie anthology.

Jindael,

That's right. "Another Name for Dawn" is an origin story, showing how Cale came to Sembia (and also how he came by the name 'Erevis Cale', which is not his given name). It is set earlier in time than the story in "Halls of Stormweather," though it was published later (contemporaneously with the release of "Shadow's Witness").

"All the Sinners Saints" is set in the time between the end of "Shadow's Witness" and the beginning of "Twilight Falling," and could be read between those two books.

Of course, neither short story is necessary reading. But hopefully they're fun.

Incidentally (and to complicate things further), my short story in "Realms of the Dragons," entitled, "Soulbound," is also related to the Cale storyline. While it does not feature Cale or his companions, it does tell the story of two beings who are important to the overall Cale story arc. If you decide to read this, it fits in after "Dawn of Night," but before "Midnight's Mask."

Just as an FYI - The entire Sembia series was amazing. Definitely different styles from the varying authors, but the characters for fun and the stories interesting. Highly recommended.

Is there another way of finding "Another Name for Dawn" aside from attempting to locate and archived magazine? Are there any plans to release that story (as WotC has done with All the Sinners Saints) online?

What are the copyright laws on copying a free short story from wizards.com and posting it here?

Just thinking because they destroy the storys after a while, and here they would remain. The thread that would have them could be made sticky so all of the scribes here could enjoy them.

I am Talanfir Swiftfeet. (In)famous across the Swoardcoast as "Tal the Swift", Brandobaris´ seraph of mischief. If ye find yer shoelaces tied together while trying to catch a thief or meet a king who is angry because somebody switched the places of his chamberpot and his crown, ye can usually (try to) find me near.

If I had a halfling mother and a human father, would I be a half-halfling or a threequarterling?

I don't think that will be necessary, really. They've not been taking stuff down from their website in a while... Their archives date back to 2000, and from 2002 on, are pretty much complete.

Joe,

At this point, there is no other way of getting the story. I'm hopeful that I can get it posted to the WotC site at the time of the release of "Shadowbred." I'll keep the scribes here posted.
