hey all,
Has anyone heard rumor/ metion of, a new version of the interactive atlas? I have been looking, and kicking myself for not purchasing this when it first came out. I have been trying to get a copy off of ebay, but as everyone knows, the price is anywhere from 150 to 200. I keep getting out bid. I think with a new, updated version put out by WOTC, it would stop the madness of people paying out the rear from 3rd parties. anyways, what are your thoughts? with my luck I will win by bidding and then a new version would come out

| I haven't heard of anything, but there wouldn't be much to include in it-maybe 15 products, and then adjusting everything for the 3e map skew. Profantasy, IIRC, hasn't done anything to justify a map software upgrade...and, well, WotC doesn't seem too inclined to reply to player demand right now(see lack of errata, the lack of a Black Wolf reprint). |

| Tifus and I got lucky and got the last copy that a hobby store in Corvallis had...brand new. We haven't heard anything about an upgrade either. |
Ack! I seem to have too much blood in my coffee stream!

I know that a lot of people would like to see this software rereleased or updated, but I've not heard anything official about such a thing happening.
I really lucked out on my copy -- I got it for half-price, from TSR's Mail Order Hobby Shop. I'd ordered from them in the past, so when they started dumping the software, they sent me half-price offers in the mail. I got both the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas and the Dragon Magazine Archive CD-ROM for half-price. The latter item is something else people want to see updated.
Personally, I think that both programs were likely over-priced when they were still new. We were just really getting into the age of PCs in every house, and the internet was still new and shiny then -- yet the software was still kinda pricey. I think that hurt sales.
Me, I'm trying to get my hands on the Expansion for the 2.0 Core Rules CD. |

Wooly,
There is a copy right now on ebay that comes with the 2.0 core rules and the atlas. You could even use the buy it now button for only 199.00 A little out of my range though, I was up to 130.00 for the last copy I bid on, but even that was not enough. I agree with you, I too would like to see the dragon magazine archive updated. |

Heh. I've already got the other software -- I just need the expansion. And since I owe the IRS money (plus V-Day is next week), spending that kinda green is kinda out of the question. |

| I have the atlas and use it a lot DMing online games. The map makers probably included information available from all previously published maps up to that point. It's an incredibly good reference. But it can also be a really inconvenient piece of software. It was designed for older PCs with low memory limits, so the world map is divided into lots of separate maps with different zoom levels. Some large regions don't have a more detailed level at all. Also, navigating these sub-maps can be really clunky. |

More accurately, it was designed to be run on Win95/98 -- it was something, at the time. It's just that advances in the PC world have left this program behind. |

Well then Realms fans, you might just get it! Sign it, and hopefully with enough interest, Profantasy will upgrade and improve the Atlas to be more functional. So come on, sign me! Let's get a new Atlas!

Has this been posted in the Wizards of The Coast boards as well? Maybe we can get some more signatures there. |
And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

Not by me. I'll not go back there for any reason until my wrongful banning is rescinded. |

If it's not too sensitive of a subject, why were you banned? You don't have to respond if you don't want to.
I was asking because I do not frequent the Wizards forums that often. |

Wooly, they are asking for the story again . . . If it gets asked for this many times, can we start calling it an "Uncle Wooly Story." I kind of like the sound of it |

I have to agree with the last part of your story though Wooly, those are the same reasons I choose to dwell in Candlekeep more often than I do the Wizards boards. |

| Not to distract this thread from Uncle Wooly Stories (heh heh), but Paizo also has a thread linking the petition to the thread as well, posted by Lilith. So its spreading out to a few different related D&D sites (of course, since its on Paizo, its only a matter of time before some Greyhawk fan shows up and claims that the FR atlas used to be the Greyhawk atlas and the programmers got all of their ideas from Gary Gygax . . . sigh). |

Someone's not bitter or annoyed, nope, not at all. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

So have I. I'm even going to sig it for everywhere I go. Of the 3361 members, where are they now? Come on lurkers! If you bothered to sign up here because you love the Realms, how could you not be excited at a Google Earth-styled Atlas (assuming they improve it to that level) or even it's a simple upgrade to make it fully functional under current-day OS's?
I still use and refer to the old version with all 936 maps to date despite the globe being rendered inert. I'm ready to see the Atlas improved instead of forgotten (the irony), and to see a day where I have thousands of edition-neutral maps for it created and supplied by all the users of the Atlas the way the good people over on Dundjinni support their product.

I'm not over there... The only two forums I'm on are this one and the Heavy Metal Pro one. And since that's all about BattleTech, it's hardly appropriate to plug an FR product over there. |
