What if Bane after watching Cyric and his development of power from the slaying of Leira, decided to gain extra power by increasing his portfolio? By becoming the god of Enchantement spells and effects? (It fits with his tyranny and fear ports as enchantment spells can enslave a persons mind or cause great fear in them. Even hate might fit with the right spell.)

The aventure can be scene in three ways.
1) The forces of good (most likely under Mystra, but others might apply) try to stop Bane from gaining this power. How do they do this? Stop spells, destory or capture important artifacts, make another god the holder of the port (perhaps Oghma, it fits with his bardic skills and his images in our world.), etc...
2)The forces of evil try to stop Bane from gaining power, so that they can gain this power. (I can see Shar or Cyric trying to go this path)
3) The forces of Bane trying to aid this power grab by their god. The minion hunt magics that might give Bane the right to hold this power.

Thoughts?

Enchantment spells seem a little too subtle for Bane, as I imagine he'd try to rule by fear, not by resorting to 'weaker' methods.
Though I can see your point, as enchantment spells that dominate anothers mind are often rarely used by good spellcasters, as they are so unpleasant.

If you want to go ahead with it, I could see a possible alliance between the church of mystra, and the church of whoever had Enchantments in their portfolio atm (I forget who)

The fact is no one does. It like Abjurement, Transmutation, Evocation, and Conjuring it is all open. So it is possible for Bane to pick it up. Either for new gods or existing ones.

Just some ideas.

Hmmm... I don't think we need more "Gods of Wizards Schools" than there already are. It is quite obvious that Necromancy and Divination should have "independent" deities, but I disagree with any ideas for a "God of Evocation" or a "God of Transmutation"... these fall clearly under the portfolio of Magic (Mystra and Azuth).

Seers, forture-tellers and diviners might use means beyond magic (psionics, drugs, etcetera.) to practise their art, and necromancy and undeath should, in my opinion, be separate from "General Magic" and lawful or good deities (Thus Velsharoon was probably "brought in" to replace fallen Myrkul).

Talos tried to wrench the portfolio of "Destructive magic" for himself, assuming the alias of the drow deity "Malyk the Dark Mage", but it didn't work out for him.
