To borrow a phrase from Obi-Wan, I think that it may be true, "from a certain point of view." I got the feeling that Larloch may have perhaps nudged some of his servants to move in this direction, but was not directly responsible for it, nor were they aware that their master might have manipulated them into following this course of action.
He just kind of left the clues for them and sat back and watched them do what they could with what he left them. So while he literally didn't have direct responsibility, he wasn't ignorant of the overall plot and may have had a hand in planting the seed . . . if that makes any sense.
It does. Still, maybe I'm too idealistic and naive for my own good, but based on how the Larloch scene was written, I got the impression that he really was contrite. Or...maybe he was just trying to look contrite.
Who knows? Like I said, I don't fully understand the story, but it's a good read nonetheless. |
"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams." --Richard Greene (letter to Time) |

A superb story. Yes, a little cryptic, but realistically so, in the way that FAR too many fantasy adventure stories aren't. Character confusion at the beginning, wanders a little, but lovely character sketches. Larloch, the Srinshee . . . I wish Ed would do a lot more of this. Mr. Athans, another Ed Realms short story collection, please? |

All I can say about this story is WOW. Ed you really must write more novels about Larloch. I was so glad that I read this story now after the Halaster incident. Cause now I have a new hero. Before I wanted to be Halaster when I grew up but now I think I would rather be like Larloch when I grow up...(Not that I ever will grow up but hey you never know. )
I always like reading stories about the chosen and the KoMD. Although I think every story about them should include Torm. I try to imagine he is there even when he isn't. So Ed can you now please make every story you write include Larloch, the chosen and Torm? |
Turox Antas Dragonslayer - "People will believe anything they want to believe, or fear to believe." Wizard's First Rule: Chapter 36, Page #397, US Hard Cover (revealed by Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander). Explanation by Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander: "People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."
