Greetings 
What is the best source for information on Anauroch (the great desert)? Has anyone seen an old source that provides an encounter table for said desert if so what is the source? I do own sandstorm but I am hoping for a few monsters from a 2e to convert to 3.5 thanks.

| Look up the old "Elminsters Ecologies". They have a book with about 20 pages describing the desert. I think it got random encounter tables too... Good luck. |

| HE HE... a certified sourcebook of the area might be a good idea t start. Just curious, is it 2nd or 3rd edition. Might consider buying it. |

Aye... I noticed. But the FR 2e boxed set wasn't released until 1993 -- and Anauroch was published in 1991.
Unless... AD&D 2e was first released in 1989... so perhaps the sourcebook is catalogued as part of AD&D 2e, but it's still based in FR 1e in terms of product release.

| At any rate, its a awesome sourcebook. And it introduced the Phaerimm, which haunted my dreams for months as I tried to come up with a reason for my PCs to run into them, and more importantly, run into them and survive. I still prefer that illustration of the Phaerimm to any others that I've seen. Plus you find out about some interesting things, such as the Cult of the Sacred Skull. |

FRA updated the FR ruleset for AD&D 2e -- so that carries through to Anauroch published in 1991. The actual complete setting update for the "Old Grey Box" occured in 1993.

True, for the Realms at least. Not entirely accurate for others as I recall... as Dragonlance did. That's part of the problem with the TotL boxed set and DLA hardcover  . And I think Ravenloft did as well.

Well I picked up a download of Anauroch as a PDF for $4.00 thanks to all for pointing it out. There is a lot of great background material in the product and some 2e monsters to convert.

Another very good source for the Anauroch was the Netheril boxed set, which provides some good ideas as to what might lie hidden beneath all that sand, in various areas.
The Zhentil Keep boxed set also notes some more noteable oasis' and such, while the Cult of the Dragon speaks of a "Harrowsmouth" adn as truggle for supremacy amongst the blue dragons of (a portion of ?) the Anauroch. |

| Sounds reasonable enough... Just hard to track down some of the old 2nd edition boxed sets. My local RPG dealers are hard pressed on getting new 2nd edition material. And when it surfaces, you have to move fast or be beaten to it by others of equal mind... |

My wife and I play strictly using the 3.5 rules set now but in terms of capturing the background and flavor of the Realms 2e has the best material in terms of quality and quantity of writing. In terms of games mechanics I believe 3.5 to be superior the problem is you should not have to sacrifice one to get the other. Our solution has been to buy most of the 2e material as PDF on line and use them for background material for our game groups playing in the Realms. Most of the box sets are available in PDF for like $6.00 bucks now. It’s nice to own the physical material but it’s getting harder and harder to do. |
