Hi, this is my first post around these parts (just registered today), and I thought that I'd say "howdy" by posting something very strange that just happened in a game that I run.

The party has been building themselves into a crime-syndicate and has (as of yet) only attracted the modest interest of the Watch. They are all about 7th level or so. They include a drow priest of Vhaerun, a drow ranger (but not a good violet eyed one!), a boozing illuskan duelist, a merchant minded rogue, and a befuddled Amnian necromancer that dabbles in being a monk.

After having successfully completing their first 'slaying for hire,' the rogue is approached by a messenger. The message is a request from the Lords that his drow companions meet with one of the city magistrates to discuss their continued residency withing the city. (The priest had slipped up a couple of times leading to rumors of drow stalking the city nights, and had been tied to the rogue by the investigation of a Watch investigator). They are guaranteed safe conduct to and from the meeting.

The merchant/rogue, upset at having been tied to the rumors hand the message to the Vhaerunian priest, and washes his hands of the affair beginning to wonder how he can distance himself from these itinerant drow elves.

The priest, seeing opportunity, composes a reply, which is far too long to recount here but here are the highlights:
-refusal until certain condidtions are met-
-Condition #1- Stay in a guest suite in Piergon's Palace for a tenday prior to a hearing (which is to be attended by no less than three Lords).
-Condition #2- Piergon's daughter is to escort the priest and ranger around the city for the duration of their stay and treat them as honored diplomats.
-Condition #3- The priest and ranger must recieve gifts valuing no less than 10,000gp and including at least one magic item apiece.
-Condition #4- Guarantee of safe conduct for a year.

The very excited Vhaerunian priest then hands this letter to the drow ranger and tells him to make certain that Piergon gets it. The Ranger is alarmed! What if he gets caught? The priest reassures him by casting a "powerful magic" upon him. You all might recognize this "powerful magic" as a second level spell called invisibility.

Did I mention that the Drow Ranger was not very intelligent? He interprets the instructions of the priest to mean "deliver this letter to Piergon personally." Equipped with courage and an invisibilityspell, he approaches Piergon's Palace in the middle of the night.

About this time, one of the guards atop the walls nudges another guard and murmurs to him "get a load of this!" and hands him a Gem of Seeing. It seems that folks have tried to get to Piergon before using such exotic methods as 2nd level spells. The guards quietly send for some assistance, wishing to apprehend this oh-so-sneaky fellow and simultaneously see what else he might try. They don't have to wait long.

The drow ranger, seeing that the front gates are well lit and guarded, takes it into his head to see if there is a back door. Thus, he begins to walk around back.

A few guard wizards and hold person spells later, he is safely in shackles, and being interviewed by the Open Lord of Waterdeep. In said interview, he confesses to every misdeed that he and his party members have committed, and renders their locations, skills, and the locations of their secret houses (formerly used by now dispanded cells of Shadow Thieves). He claims that he really only ever wanted to be good, and was ignorant of local law. He would love to work for the Watch if that would be permissable.

Lord Paladinson decides that his first test to join the Watch will be to apprehend his former companions (the other PC's). He has a magic tracer placed upon him so that he can be found if he attempts to run away.

Now, the Drow Ranger starts to grow some brains. When released, he walks straight to the Vhaerunian priest and tells him "Good News! I got captured, but Lord Paladinson agreed to all of our terms. They're getting rooms ready for us right now, and are calling the Arcane Order to craft some items for us!"

The ways that he captured the rest of his companions are equally humorous, but I'll stop now because this post has grown to the size of a novel. If you're a glutton for punishment and want to hear the rest, let me know and I'll oblige.

continuing...

said Drow Ranger typically inhabited one of the abandoned shadowthief hidey-holes in the sewers of Waterdeep, so he went home (after sending the Vhaerunian priest to his doom), and acted normally, tending to his animal compaion a pet Otyugh (sp?). When the Necromancer/Monk from Amn came to deliver a freshly brewed vial of poison to the Drow Ranger, the pet Otyugh immediately attacked the Amnian (as the ranger had instructed it to do). The encounter went something like this...

Amnian Necro/Monk: walking through the sewers, wave at the Otyugh and search for that infernal secret door.
DM: The Otyugh attacks you. Were you expecting that?
Amnian: umm... no.
DM: oh, well then he catches you in a surpise round, what's your AC?
(Fight ensues, and the Drow Ranger shows up)
Amnian: Get this thing off of me!
Ranger: Spot! Stop that! (purposely does not give the correct command phrase) It gone insane! I can't stop it!
Amnian: Then help me kill it!
Ranger: Draws his crossbow and begins shooting the Necro Monk with sleep poisoned bolts. "Damn! I missed it! Get out of my way!" Continues shooting the Amnian.

It just gets more fun from here folks, tune in next time!

The last two members of the party (the merchanty rogue, and the over-aggressive alcoholic duelist) are starting to sweat. None of their other guild members have dropped off any new information, nor can they locate them. They begin to believe that perhaps the Watch has caught up to them. They decide to check the private residence of the Amnian Necromancer as a last ditch effort to find their companions (typically, they never approached each other at their private residences to retain plausible deniability). They find only his mistress and his familiar (a raven). The mistress tells the super sleuth duo that the Amnian Necro hasn't been around in days and that his pet raven has been frantic.

These two recognize the Raven as the necro's familiar and kidnap it. They whisper into its ears, "show us where your master is" and it starts flying.

So they're off, running down the street paying no attention to where they are going, just trying desperately to keep the raven in sight. (I believe the duelist's player muttered something about, "I knew that damned bird would be good for something sooner or later...").

So intent are they upon following the bird, that even though I described various streets and such that they are passing, they are surprised out of their minds to suddenly be standing before... Castle Waterdeep!

This commotion (two individuals staring at the sky, running full speed and knocking people over) has intrigued the gate guards. They become especially intrigued when these two miscreants see the guards and suddenly start walking the other way and whistling...

As you might imagine, they were stopped, questioned, identified, and incarcerated.

Incidentally, this is why REAL bad guys don't go looking for lost companions themselves, they have flunkies to do stuff like that!

Seems like you must have had a couple of rather surpriced players on your hand when you revealed the arrival point of the raven... Sounds like a few missed perception checks.
