Well met all,

Due to a 1999 Peterbuilt hitting my 1973 pickup, I find that I have a few extra coin available for purchasing some Realmslore (no one was hurt, other than my truck).
My question to the learned sages of this board is this...what in your opinion would be the best to pick up? We already have the 1e grey box, and Ruins of Undermountain box set.
I did find a store that has the FR Interactive Altas, new and still sealed, but they want $70 US for it, and that is more than I wish to spend on one thing.
So, what are your suggestions, for someone who is wanting to gather lore, that you think is a 'must have' of the Realms.
~Kes

BTW, please don't bash other's opinions of materials, I don't wish to ask a mod to delete another of my threads for this reason.

Ack! I seem to have too much blood in my coffee stream!

When did 'common sense' cease to be common?

Grins at the mod remark. :)

And I'd say try to get some of the Volo's Guides and the 2nd edition campaign box set.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Thanks Kuje
I'll look into the Volo's guides. I have a couple as pdf's that are on the Wizard's site, and know where I can get the one for BG II. I also know where I can find Sea of Fallen Stars, Empire of the Shining Sea, F&A, P&P (all the same hobby shop), and they have a few others that I can't remember at this hour of the morning. The good thing is that they are all new, and it didn't seem that they had bumped the prices any because of them being out of print.
Anyone else?

Yeah,

I'd get the deity trilogy as well. I always reference them.

I need to check and see if I've got the 2e box set...might have a lot of other things besides it, but not that...kinda weird.

EDIT: I do have it.

And if you can... I would suggest one or two of the older 2e boxed sets -- Empires of the Shining Sea and Ruins of Myth Drannor immediately spring to mind as highly informative sources for their particular regions.

Thanks one and all and please keep the suggestions coming.

And I did pick up Volo's Guide to BG II today. Will probably get F&A/P&P, or Empires of the Shining Sea next.

Forgotten realms Adventures (Dragon trove are selling it from 15-28 USD)

You may also want to invest in some old Pazio issues of Dungeon and Dragon magazines

Dungeon issues 69-73 contain the Mere of Dead Men series for example

By the way who came off worse the 1999 Peterbuilt or your 1973 Pickup?

My money is on the Peterbuilt coming off alot worse than the pickup

Nope, the Peterbuilt won . I don't think it even scratched the bumper of it, while my pickup was totaled.

And thanks for the tip about the magazines , we subscibe to Dragon, but not Dungeon yet.

There is of cause another option

You could always give all your pickup money to Ed, Thomas Reid or Steven Schend and commision them to write an FR source book on region of your choice!

A regional sourcebook on Damara, Vaasa and Impiltur, wouldn't that be nice - I'd take Impiltur in a heartbeat. Maybe I could unleash the four dynasties of Impiltur and a write-up of all its monarchs as a WE. Or a big East timeline. Or a few more swords from Soargar's Legacy. Endless options ...

Well, let's just say I'm quite interested in the upcoming Impiltur Dragon article myself, now... Or, as George put it, I've fallen prey to his and Eric's devilish plan...

Dunno if you still need some input here, but since I sit here with nothing else to do ...

Many of the old FR line of supplements for initially 1st then 2nd edition are quite useful, altho some have been updated in later supplements (like Lands of Intrigue, Empires of the Shining Sea etc.).
There are some FR books that never really received an update, like Anauroch or Dwarves Deep.

If you want some more detail on elves I'd suggest Elves of Evermeet...

The old Cormyr and Dalelands books haven't been updated either. Ironically enough Cormyr, although kinda old in the timeline, is still, aside from the novels, the only "real" source on the forest kingdom.

Maybe I just missed the talk about it here in candlekeep...

they can also be relatively cheap if bought used on Amazon.com. I pciked up a copy of Code of the Harpers and Faiths and Pantheons. Both less than $20

My favorite two 2e sourcebooks were Cloak and Dagger and Empires of the Shining Sea. The first because it offered information not seen anywhere else about the activities of the various societies and organizations in Faerun. The second because I like Calimport, and love any information on The Twisted Rune.

And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood
