Boy, talk about a silly question. What place in the Realms is best? You're going to get far too many answers. However, if this is that drow-character story you've referred to, then I think somewhere in the northern realms is best. Or just someplace without lots of cities, and more trees. See if you can get your hands on the Realms Atlas. I found the first edition of it in a used bookstore, and it really helped with understanding the Realms . . . .

I bought the atlas when I was 15. Of course, it was used, so it was about half price. Good condition, though.

If you start the story in the Dales, you have and plenty of material available, either on the internet or through the Q&A game on Candlekeep and there's plenty of drow there nowadays (1372 DR)

Of course the North / Silver Marches is another option, besides some gaming products available, that's where most of Salvatore's Drizzt novels are set. Two major drow cities in the vicinity: Menzo and Ched Nassad... what would you like more...

Okay, less canon material needed, more DM input... Try Tethyr and Calimshan in the south wst of Faerun. Drow on the surface in the woods that form the border between these two nations as well as underneath most of the Calim Desert including underneath (and in) Calimport...
