Ok Faraer, Woolly, Krash and other LoreLords of the Realms. I'm having a major NPC give a dinner for my PCs and I want to throw all the stops out. He's using porcelain dishes imported from Kara Tur and gold flatware crafted by nearby dwarves, but I can't discover if the Realms has crystal glasses (leaded or otherwise), or for that matter, crystal vases etc. Anyone know where these would come from in the Realms? If the Realms *doesn't* have crystal, what would y'all use instead? Thanks for any help!

I vaguely remember something about glassware in relation to the shining south but that's were that memory stop and now I'm going nuts because I can't figure it out. |

The only credible 'official' answer would come from Ed but I'm thinking elves when it comes to high-quality glass and crystalware. So maybe they can source some (extraordinarily expensive) stuff from somewhere like Evereska. Just a thought.

quote: [Glass is] common in some parts of the Realms, and rare as gold and gems in others—and in most places in the Realms, windows are leaded affairs of many small panes, not huge, rectangular unbroken panes. Moreover, most glass is “shifty” (full of bubbles and uneven thicknesses and whorls that distort reflections and vision through them). Shutters are the norm: full overlapping boards sealed with pitch in winter, and slats over which are tacked layers of gauze to keep out insects in the summer (if the dust gets bad, occupants wet down the gauze to impede it). The abodes of the poor will have shutters but lack glass at all, and some homes have frames around window-openings into which boards can be slid (and precious arrays of glass are taken out of storage and slide into place only on special occasions, such as royal visits, marriages, and the like).
quote: In most parts of the Dales, drinking vessels are of carved wood, or soak-sealed leather, or ceramic, and a “glass glass” is regarded as an incredible luxury (why make a drinking-vessel out of something THAT breakable, when glass is so expensive etc. etc.?).
Mica is used in place of glass in some areas (where it can be easily found and mined), and certain dwarf and gnome clans know of ways to cut certain types of stone very thinly, to arrive at slate-like slabs that when set into window-frames admit light through (more or less as a glow), but aren’t transparent.

Hmmm..so I'm getting the feeling that leaded crystal glassware doesn't exist in the Realms. Oh well, I guess I'll just 'extrapolate' who would be a reasonable source for it...I like George's idea of the elves, although glassblowing is hot work over a furnace or kiln. Thanks for the answers guys, I just wanted to check first before going my own way!

There's a reference in the Spellfire novel during the scene inside Storm's farm. It's chapter 13, page 280 in my copy (paperback).
Storm pours a drink into a pair of blown-glass (real glass) horns crafted in the shape of birds.
She claims that they come from "Theymarsh in the south, where such things are common."
Hope this helps. |

yes, according to the 1st edition box, glass is rare, but at the same time you have races like the Avariel and countries like Nimbral that have not only refined glass.... they make glasssteel. Therefore, its exactly like it was previously noted. In some areas its fairly common, others its so rare as to be considered akin to lesser gems. |

Waterdeep has a glass blowers guild.
I'd also assume decent glassware can be found in Neverwinter. |
