It suddenly occurred to me this day that I should get pdfs of the other Volo's Guides. Several -- Volo's Guide to All Things Magical(formerly a suppressed work ), Volo's Guide to Cormyr, Volo's Guide to the Dalelands, and Volo's Guide to the North -- are available for free on the Wizards downloads page.

So that just leaves Volo's Guide to Waterdeep, Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast, and Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II. Paizo.com and RPGNow.com both offer the first two, but neither has the third one.

Questions:

1) Why is there not a pdf of Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II?

2) The quality of the Paizo downloads I bought wasn't ideal, especially on one of them. What's the quality of the RPGNow downloads? If it's notably better, I'll gladly spring the extra dollar apiece for those pdfs...

The simple answer to the 1st could be this: No one sent in thier copy to get scanned and so Jim Ward never got a chance to get it scanned. Or maybe someone did but the program ended before he got a chance to get it scanned.

I know I wouldn't have donated my books for that project because they cut them apart and then sent you a PDF of the book you donated, and maybe returned the now ruined to you.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Wooly, from some of the threads I have read on Paizo's boards, the PDFs might actually be the same. However, they have also said on the Paizo boards that they are actively trying to clean up and find better coppies of some of the PDFs, and if you buy them from Paizo and they later make some alterations to clean them up, get better scans, etc, you can redownload them since it keep track in you account what PDF you have bought. There is also a thread started on the boards to let them know what problems there are with various PDFs, and they have actually address some of the issues that purchasers have come up with, so it seems like they are interested in improving some of the products (I would come up with a link, but I'm still trying to remember which section of the sight it was on. If I find it later I will post it).

Here it is:

It really does depend on the particular PDFs you are looking for.

I've purchased some of the Planescape PDFs from RPGNow.com (mainly so I can browse through them while at work), and I've been happy with most of them, to a degree.

On the other hand, I've also downloaded a DL tome (an adventure module actually) and was sorely disappointed with both the quality and organisation of the copy. The original PDF I had displayed some pages at a slight angle, while the third, forth and fifth pages where actually swapped around in a fifth, forth and third progression. I reported this to RPGNow.com and they eventually pulled the PDF from their catalogues and rectified it. They did not however, apologise for the lack of professionalism with regard to the PDF that I had previously purchased.

I believe it was RPGNow that I purchased my (admittedly few) pdfs from and have no problem with any of them.

Life is either daring adventure or nothing.

1. The last year or so of TSR products was never scheduled to be ESDed, so never was. Ditto Cloak & Dagger. (Jim Butler handled the project, not Jim Ward.)

2. As far as I know, they're identical. Which one wasn't ideal? But the ones produced later on are worse quality in that they're OCRed text overlaid with a bitmap rather than fully laid-out documents.

You say that they have yet to post a link to Volo's Guide to Waterdeep?? Well, it just happens that I might have that. Now that I have checked, I do have it.

No, it's just not one of the freebies offered on the WotC site.

So last night, after paying some bills online, I ventured to the Paizo site (the earlier discussion made me decide to go with Paizo).

I was only going to get two pdfs, but I wound up buying seven. I bought:

The City of Splendors boxed set
Forgotten Realms Adventures
Sea of Fallen Stars
The Ruins of Undermountain boxed set
The Ruins of Undermountain II boxed set
Volo's Guide to Waterdeep
Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast

CoS and the Undermountain ones were a spur of the moment purchase. SoFS I got because I do seem to grab that one kinda frequently. The Volo's Guides I grabbed so I'd have all of them, and I got FRA because my print copy is starting to show its age -- when I bought that one, I wasn't as careful with my books as I now am.

I just did a quick once-thru on each one. I noticed one page of FRA seemed to have been trimmed a little too close to the edge, but that was the only issue I saw. The pdfs were all crisp and clean, and the random search I did on each one worked. So that bunch, at least is good quality.

Yeah, I like the fact that Paizo keeps track of your purchase and if they do some work, you can go back and redownload the thing. BTW, RPGNow has a listing for Cloak and Dagger now, but I couldn't find it on Paizo's site, so I imagine I'll be splitting my loyalties here, lol.

Cloak & Dagger is on the Paizo site -- I bought my copy there.

I managed to find a printed copy at a game store's going-out-of-the-RPG-business-sale. Ignore this post, I was just really happy to find it and needed to get it out somewhere.

I got the print copy when it came out. Unfortunately, it got a bit of water damage due to a freak leak in the trunk of the car I had at the time (that was the one and only time I know of that there was a leak in that area).

Well, I just did another bit of splurging. It occurred to me that no true Realms fan () would be without PDFs of both Campaign boxed sets -- the Forgotten Realms Campaign Set (1E, also known as "the old grey box"), and the 2E one, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. I also grabbed Waterdeep and the North while I was in there.

Again, they look good. I guess that one that I wasn't impressed with was merely a fluke.

My, my Wooly... Luckily Big Al is not here to read such comments .

As it is though... I only just recently picked up a PDF copy of the 2e FRCS myself -- the revised version.

Well hey, I do have both print editions. In fact, I bought the old grey box about a month or two before the announcement that the 2E version was coming out!
