Okay. In the game I play in we are going to be starting over at level 1 in the not too distant future and the DM has asked us to start thinking about character concepts.

The campaign will take place in the Sword Coast region around (but not in) Waterdeep. The party alignment is the typical Good/Neutral campaign.

I am considered one of the more versatile players in my group and can have fun playing just about anything so I let the others decide what they want to play and I try to fill the gaps. So the party is shaping up like this....

  • Human Rogue with intent on becoming an assassin (we allow neutral assassins)
  • Half-Elf Rogue/Fighter, rapier-finesse type
  • Elf Sorcerer or Wizard
  • Cleric of Kelemvor (probably Human)


So, we were talking and we think we need a Tank and I am now taking suggesting on character concepts.

I tend to play Dwarves way too often and I also tend to play Paladins way to often so those two concepts are pretty much out. I think I want to try something new. Any ideas would be appreciated.

How about a Barbarian or a Fighter aiming for the Cavalier PrC (ie a Knight who isnt a paladin)

How about a big burly half-orc, who for some reason claims to be from a noble family and is thus always trying to act noble and arrogant?

I once played a half-orc barbarian/fighter named Kapak (don't ask me why), who specialized in fighting with spiked gauntlets. All he really needed was a high strength, above average dex and a good constitution. And I let him carry around a two handed sword just in case. Maybe you like the idea. He was a lot of fun to play. Just being stupid and talking in third person so to speak. "Kapak gonna kill u! Kapak smash skull!" Stuff like that.

Nothing is impossible!

You could always take a samurai from the Complete Warrior book and hook him up. He tanks out pretty good.

Everyone thinks big when it comes to a tank type character. I like to check out ideas where one would not expect. think about a Halfling monk 1st level, add druid later and keep the levels close to equal as you gain levels. An animal companion when applicable, that is suitable for a halfling to be able to ride around on (wolf, mountain lion, cougar etc.)

I can see this character as very lethal in combat after a couple of levels gained. You are playing in the sword coast region, so monk and druid training and/ or abilities should be attainable. No one would expect a little halfling of being more than he looks.

Unless you are just wanting a big guy, with a lot of armour, who can stand in the front lines taking hit after hit, I think this would work out. Matter of fact I think I am going to roll up this character to what it will look like.

Greetings all

See if your DM will allow you to play an orog fighter +2 level adjustment he arrived in the area from waterdeep by way of skull port play him as a neutral mercenary type he’s traveling with the party for the gold. You could play him so that he slowly becomes neutral good or chaotic good. If the party stops by waterdeep even occasionally tell your dm you would like to take the gray hand enforcer prc and be an agent of the gray hand outside water deep. Recommended feats First level daylight adaptation and exotic weapon spiked chain. You might play him as a closet racist he believes his people to be innately superior to all around him the gray hand enforcers admit a lot of monstrous humanoids.

What about a halfling fighter/rogue, a la noble swordsman? Master in two rapier combat-style?, Great dexterity, and many int. points to distribute in habilities as parry, and sneak. Just thing about it, a furtive backstab with the fighter's bonifications.... and I love halflings... and the posibility of dodgin attacks while the wizard and the cleric blast 'em from distance...

Thanks for all the replies. I try to avoid high DEX fighter types at all costs because we have a guy in our group that constantly plays them and I'm a bit sick of them to be honest.

So, what I have decided upon is a ranger. I have never really played a ranger because I don't like the combat styles they give and feel there should be other options. So, working with my DM we came up with another option for combat style using Draconomicon (page 105).

The rangers favored enemy is going to be "Dragons" and he will aspire to be a Dragon Slayer (Draconomicon). It's a D&D classic that I've never played. So, here's the combat style I will be using...

Level 2: Dragonfoe
Level 6: Dragonbane
Level 11: Dragondoom

It actually works out really well because the prerequisites are not that far from the feats for the official combat styles in terms of power.

I plan on having him be a human who wields a spear as his primary weapon.

Feats I have in mind are Iron Will and Dodge (at 1st level) because they are the prerequisites for Dragonslayer. Than once I take levels in that PrC (6th level probably) he'll have heavy armor proficiency and be able to grow away from the High Dex mold that I loath so much.

Any ideas for useful feats for a Ranger 10/Dragon Slayer 10???

If I recall correctly there was feature called "Bane of the enemies" or something like that that made all the weapons hitting a predilect enemie work like an scourge weapon for this enemy and any kind of proficiency with the weapon (spear in this case), dragons don't give a second chance.

Half-Giants (Psionic races in SRD) make excellent tanks, they only have a LA+1, a Stomp special ability for emergencies, but more importantly they make excellent 'disable' tanks.

With powerful build they have a much easier time disarming/tripping/bull rushing opponents, and similarly resisting those effects. Also the fact that one could use (for example) a great sword in one hand and a large shield, means he can take dmg as well as dish it out, plus the large weapon makes it harder for him to be disarmed

Speaking of psionic races...if you are looking for a tank, you should take a look at the Pysichic warrior.
loads of temp hit points, damage reduction, other nifty abilities and some cool feats

Run faster! The Kobolds are catching up!
