Hey Ed and THO,
I was wondering if Ed has any tips to find players in your area? Also I'm wondering what is Ed's and THO's favourite tabletop RPG class? Thanks for the help you two. |

Hi Ed,
I was wondering if you could give us some lore about the Grayclaws that are associated with Mask that is mentioned in FR Adventures. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I feel that Lathander is sorely under represented in Realms lore. He is a supposedly a very prominent god with a very large following and wealthy powerful church in several of the most prominent regions in the Realms, yet there is very little info on his activities or the activities of his clergy. To my knowledge, his clergy does not exist in any Realms novels and the only Lathanderite I've ever seen written about is a Paladin in a short story.
For such a prominent and powerful god, he receives surprisingly little coverage. I'd certainly like to see some more coverage on the activities of the followers of the Morning Lord. It seems like they would have been more prominent in Cormyr's Dragon War, but Ed and Troy chose to focus on Gods with a lesser following in Cormyr like Chauntea and Tempus. There was even mentioned a priest of Malar and Tyr, yet there are prominent followers of Lathander in Cormyr and it's as though they were nonexistent. Do you really think the Morninglord's followers would have sat on the sidelines during such a serious event?
I also noticed that the module City of the Spider Queen featured Daggerdale as a starting point for the adventure, yet used a Priest of Tyr as Randal Morn's right hand man even though a prominent Church of Lathander exists right in the middle of Daggerdale.
Lathander needs some coverage. This major god with major followings in Shadowdale, Cormyr, Sembia, and with a church or presence in almost every major city and place in Faerun seems to be a bit player in every major happening in Faerun. That just doesn't seem right to me. How would the Shadovar feel when a Cleric of Lathander starts to bring the light into their darkness?
Clerics of Lathander are powerful wielders of the Morning Lord's light and yet they are treated like some chump. Even during Cormyr's war with the Tuigan, the only mention of a Lathanderite was a priest who was shot trying to help a soldier on a boat because he might have had the plague. Lathander needs some love Ed. |

Celtavian, there's a paladin of Lathander in the books Finder's Bane and Tymora's Luck; Lathander himself appears in the latter novel. |

And from the parts of the Last Mythal series I've been able to get my hands on, Araevin's supporting characters include a Lathanderite or two. |

I just got back into this, okay? Give me time (or better yet money) - I'll catch up soon enough. |

I read those novels. That was the paladin I was talking about. I was hoping for some coverage of the priests. In the actual D&D game, priests are quite on par with wizards in terms of spell power. I was hoping at some point someone covers this fact in a novel. |

Hello All
Been away for a few but glad to chime in on the question and please excuse repost of monk question that Ed answered recently.
I too would like to know more about goings on in candlekeep and what unknown events have transpired in Underdark. Quakes, cave collapses, portal/planar problems, portal/planar invasions/migrations and just how the heck have the Imaskari gone unnoticed all these years even by the gods while working major magic within their sealed home. |

Ok, another emergency! (game on Wednesday... and Realms politics are rearing their heads... )
Background: my campaign started in 1372 DR. Around mid 1375 DR, after vanquishing a major foe and inadvertently saving Waterdeep from partial destruction (emphasis on inadvertantly), the heroes have returned to their homes in Velprintalar. One of these heroes, a gnomish entrepreneur, gained enough fame and repute to find a very influential business partner, which in turn recruited a lot of workforce for the gnome. [gnome has Leadership feat, with Economic Leadership Score of 25, including Influence Modifier of +2; his business partner is his cohort, a gnomish Merchant Princess from the Dragonjaw Mountains with the Business Savvy and Favored in Guild feats, and she has memberships in two major guilds in Velprintalar - she is taking Leadership in one level as well, which will greatly enhance the Influence Score of both gnomes, etc.]
The Skinny: In contacting the City officials, the gnome wants to ensure that any of his plans for a gnomish contingent in Velprintalar are not only permitted but welcomed. The gnome's offer is simple: permit gnomes to take refuge in Velprintalar and allow them to construct their own community under the city. In return, the gnomes will provide high quality arms and equipment to defend Aglarond. The Gnome city is requested to remain secret from the public, for fear of intrusion or resentment from some of the bigger races. With magical arms and armor created at or just above cost, Velprintalar could quickly become the best equiped fighting force Faerun has seen. The gnome also hints that his illusionists and newly formed clergy may also offer service in the defense of Velprintalar. "Underhome" as the gnome plans to call it will take years to construct, and will offer refuge beneath the surface for the citizens of Velprintalar...should the need ever arise.
Question: Would the Simbul agree to the terms outlined above? More importantly, what is the 'schedule' of the Simbul at this time? (1375 - 1377 DR)
I know she was active in the Elminster in Hell and Elminster's Daughter novels, the latter of which seems to indicate that she has some 'free time' to rule at this point. I can approximate that latest appearances in El's Daughter were around 1374 DR: I would appreciate if Ed could somehow tell me if "I'm in the ballpark", and if, for my campaign's purposes, it would be safe to say that she can meet high-level PCs in 1375-77 DR
Finally, and I know this would be considered 'eating my cake too': could we get rough 'roleplay' guidelines as to how the Simbul may present herself and interact with such 'high-level' adventurers, who now feel confident and important enough that the "realm cannot go without their good contribution." [i.e. egos are getting a bit bigger, and 'making things happen' is the order of the day for the gnome...]
Awright... last Wednesday's game I decided the Simbul was "busy", so the next game is tomorrow, and I will assume that she is ruling in Aglarond the the current time in my campaign. Any other sage here would like to comment? |

Greetings Ed Greenwood & THO
A couple of questions this may also apply to TheRedBard aswell....
I have recently decided to take upon myself to compile an un-official book, "The Book O' Ye Stout Ones"(when finished will be submitted to Wotc). A book for dwarves form FR detailing everything from History of the race, Social structure, Kingdoms old and new / reclaimed to new Prc's and every other little detail.
First question to Ed, I hope you have no objections to this project. 2: I am searching everywhere for more infomation on Dwarves in FR and DND from 1st ed through to current, Could you suggest any archive files anywhere I can get more info from? 3: Any info you may have yourself that you may want to impart( cheeky I know but I had to ask )? 4: Question to anyone reading this Please could you send any of your ideas or Dwarf law you have access too to me?
I thank you in advance

To the Purple Dragon Knight
I think you have to provide more information if you want useful answers or advice. Professions in all manners of city construction will be reqired. I too face a similar dilemma in how to birth my town though yours is far more complicated just to break ground.
1- This gnome seeks to build a community within an existing community as opposed to just melding into current one, for what reason?
A city built within a city falls under what laws, surely you don't mean for gnomes to establish their own laws, taxes, militia, churches within an existing city. Thats like me asking the Mayor of NYC to allow me to build an indian reservation/ in Manhattan and in return Manhattan recieves access to native indian wares???????
3- Ok they get gnome crafted items, at what price and do the gnomes pay merchant taxes, shipping taxes to Velprintalar?
You want the rulership to lie to it's citizens that an entire city is being built within their lands simply because the gnomes don't want to be picked on? And dependant upon circumstances this city will take in Velprintar refugees in times of war, etc.... which means the gnomes would not consider themselves Velprintar citizens??
All of this and countless other problems current and in foreseeable future I could raise, all of this as opposed to saying to this gnome contingent. "Welcome to Velprintalar, follow the laws, pay your taxes and we'll get along just fine. Yes... why are you still standing here, I have important matters of state to attend to....which is why you are here??." "What!!" "I have strove to keep the borders of these lands free from Thay for longer than you have drawn breath gnome, lost many a good citizen who asked nothing other than to live free of opression and here you ask to be given land to do with as you will in exchange for promises without substance!" "Oh forgive me, you were not finished, very well, enlighten me to this vision of wisdom that will remove this incredulous look that now sits upon my face." Ahhh , I see and in secret no less, all in return for arms that have rarely been used in Algarond's defense, arms that your kind have absolutely not allowed to be sold to the Thayans surely. That yourself have personally made sure was wrested from their dead grasp than be turned against the good people of this land."
I'll stop there, of course you could do as you please in your campaign but then you could also give these gnomes all spellfire as well. Gaping wholes in the logic of why any ruler would allow such a thing, made more difficult by your choice of location and ruler. Think of it more as a fleshed out environment and not skill points, modifiers and such, think of nation indian's today and what could they possibly offer a state to allow them to do something simple like settling an area, much less profiting from that settlement and determining policies regarding it's current citizens.
Would like to know how it turns out either way

Thank you soooo much for the input, Createvmind! You opened doors that I had not even noticed up to now, and have perhaps made my 'Simbul' intro much more interesting in the process! :) :) :)
Couple of questions/clarifications though:
1. The gnome has owned and operated a business in Velprintalar for the last two years. A racist trade consortium from Altumbel has tried to shut him down through sabotage and illegal undercutting of prices, but the gnome has weathered both attacks by shrugging, turning back to his shop, and working harder.
2. The gnome is completely legit, pays taxes on time and forks over the guild dues generously. He has started to take many an apprentice for free (lets them keep their share of the profit, and does not require a mandatory employment period once they complete the apprenticeship)
3. Rumors of his success has spread to the Dragonjaw Mountains, his homeland, and over 150 gnomes have migrated to his shop, therefore the wishes for an underground expansion.
4. Velprintalar has agreed to give him the permit for expansion, but work must be supervised by City officials and all modifications to the city sewers are to be approved and annotated on official drawings. It's costly, and he's bearing the entire cost.
5. Once the work is complete, the City requires that 60 of his gnomes serve as sewer patrol under the entire spread of Velprintalar. The gnome must pay them (not the City). This treaty is indefinite.
6. The only advantage gained by the character here is this: once the work is complete, he will be the land owner for the new homes built underground. He can sell them for cash at a later/harder time. He must still pay the patrols, pay city taxes on each and every home he owns there, provide all services underneath, etc. At completely random times, the city watch is allowed in to inspect, search and enforce laws. At any time the city reserves the right to observe the work done by the patrolling gnomes. If there is reasonable doubt that illegal activities are ever occuring, complete lockdown of Underhome can be maintain by the city.
Now, about your suggestions:
A) Do you think the Simbul is this ironhanded with the merchant class and business owners in general? The gnome being a neutral good priest/wizard of Garl Glittergold, would this play into her decisions?
B) The gnome offers masterwork and magical weapons to Aglarond's forces at cost + 10% (i.e. 60% of market price listed in DMG/PHB). These are huge savings. I have already DMed the military officials of Velprintalar in being very excited about this. Now, about limiting trade to Thay or other countries: are other merchants restricted so? if not, is that because their goods are not weapons, armor or alchemical in nature? If one follows that logic, food is dangerous too, as it allows Red Wizards to live... (the breathing ones anyhow! )
C) All in all, and compared to various merchants in Velprintalar, the gnome is putting more on the line to have his housing problem fixed (the building he owns cannot fit all the gnomes that have shown up at his doorstep). He went through all the legal and admin stuff, did not cut any corner, and was the subject of a few corporate attacks along the way. He hasn't struck back, but he is getting indeed weary of the Altumbel morons who are trying to shut him down at all costs. Him and his adventuring friends have also fought evil on countless times within and outside Aglarond. He is friends with some royals from Impiltur and with Alhazmabad, a male wyrm copper from the Pirate Isles, all of which value his goods highly (these customers have made his shop more popular along the years, due to the excellent word-of-mouth)
I look forward to reading your comments! |

Ed, I've not asked many questions besides a small few, but here is one I would love to have more information on for something I'm working on, both here on this site, and abroad...
Would you have any information that you could give about the small little nation in the Shining South known as Veldorn?
I know there isn't to much information out and about by it, very little indeed, and I'm seeking more information about this "spoken of and hidden" place due to all the monsters and creatures that roam in this area! I mean a vampire is the big shot down there with bunches of city-states that (some how) band together when they're being toyed with! Most fascinating for me and my ideas !
Much appreication if you can show anything about this place if the Viel of NDA isn't covering it...much! |

I thought of another place, Noktil. It vanished from Cormyr between the Cormyr Accessory and Volo's Guide.
If I had to pick a person, how about Emthrara Amberdown. We haven't anything from her in a while, not even an appearance in Elminster's Daughter.
I, also, was a fan of Ellis Peters. Roger Zelazny was, for a long time, my favorite living author. When he died, I said Edith Pargeter was, and she passed away later that same year. So I never declared anyone else my favorite living author, since I wanted to keep the rest alive. And it has worked, too.

Ed,
Just a quick one regarding possibly Dwarves Deep FR11.
I have order a copy off the internet, but it has yet to arrive.
My question : Are there any references to Dwarven Knights in this sacred tome? I am researching for my book and I am looking for PrC's, I would have thought the Dwarves would have had Knights defending there Kingdoms. I hoped that the PrC Dwarven Defender is not the only Knight like PrC, I have visions of War Boar riding Knights defending the Kingdom of Delzoun but I would like any realms law on this first before I start making it up! |

I have a quick request for GM advice from Ed. Spellcasters with new and unique spells (or variants of widespread ones) seems to be a staple of Realms lore. How often would players face such, though? Is there a benchmark for the amount of 'rare' spells that players might encounter on a given opponent spellcaster? |

Hi Ed. Just wondering...how many pages of graph paper (assuming it's 8 1/2" x 11", correct me if I'm wrong) did it take for you to map out your version of Undermountain? Thanks! |

I'm neither Ed nor THO (and you've both been too long absent! Write faster, Ed, write faster!), but I was at a GenCon once where Ed laid out JUST THE FIRST LEVEL of Undermountain (the layer reached via the shaft in the Yawning Portal), and it was 109 sheets of 8.5" x 11" graph paper, faint pencil, and (I think) 4 squares to the inch. It didn't much match the printed box, because (as Ed was explaining then), a lot of the map generated for that was taken from an old Empire of the Petal Throne campaign run by then-TSR map boss DCS III (Dave Sutherland) for time reasons. Sutherland could color and detail his map in-house, and the keyed central area of Ed's was then "dropped in." I of course await Ed's much deeper explanation. Edit: Postscript: Ed's Undermountain was of course FULLY KEYED, and he updated it by "roleplaying the monsters" (and Halaster) to respond to PC activities. If they dropped a torch, there it lay, too. |

I'm limiting myself to one suggestion here...
Yansedara, her consort Vaerana, and the city of Elversult. |
Zandilar ~amor vincit omnia~ ~audaces fortuna iuvat~
As the spell ends, you look up into the sky to see the sun blazing overhead like noon in a desert. Then something else in the sky catches your attention. Turning your gaze, you see a tawny furred kitten bounding across the sky towards the new sun. Her eyes glint a mischevious green as she pounces on it as if it were nothing but a colossal ball of golden yarn. With quick strokes of her paws, it is batted across the sky, back and forth. Then with a wink the kitten and the sun disappear, leaving the citizens of Elversult gazing up with amazed expressions that quickly turn into chortles and mirth.
The Sunlord left Elversult the same day in humilitation, and was never heard from again. |

Hmmm its been more than 6-7 days
I hope Hooded one hasnt been "Holidaying" in one of those charming places where the locals tend to shoot at you again........
I know, I've been pondering this myself and thought to myself more then once that it's been a bit longer then what THO said when they went on vaca.... |

Oh good, I'm not the only one pondering where her presence is. I know the lovely THO wouldn't just vanish with out saying "Tis be a bit longer everyone.." (if she could) |

To THO & ED, I can't wait for your return! Hopefully then my goal to overwhelm you guys with questions will be met. This post, my question is 'why do sages call the Seven Citadels War so'? And I was wondering if you had any lorebits on the transition of Dlardrageth and other evil cambion (do you like that archaic [2ed] term?) property to the normal elves of siluvanede. Specifically these hidden caches... I know that after Eaerlann uncovered and decimated House Dlardrageth the property found its way into the hands of other Siluvanedenn elves. How exactly did the different personas of Siluvanede interact with each other throughout that kingdom's history? For example, there is the mythal-city that puts itself in stasis because of the acts of other Siluvaneden elves, like the Dlardrageths. The earliest Siluvanedenn must have been very proud or maybe even good natured only falling to corruption later. Any info would help a tonne! |

Well met
Indeed, I grew concerned of late and made an attempt to contact The Hooded One. No response thus far, but i'm sure she'll grace us with her lovely presence soon enough |
