I have been pondering this in my head ever since I read it in one of the WotSQ books. Vhaeraun needed one of his followers to grant him access to the area where Lolth was at. Now, what I really find interestin is that both Vhaeraun & Lolth are located in the Demonweb Pits. Why couldn't Vhaeraun just go there himself?? He has the power to do so. Hell, Selvetarm did it without help. Kind of makes one wonder, does it not??

Look at it this way. The Demonweb Pits is just part of the 66th level of the Abyss that Lolth has exerted her personal control over, her children are not permitted to enter freely (thus the need of aid to get past the locks/wards/defenses.
It works something like this, when all three were banished each managed to take a part of the 66th level to live in, that there was a demon lord (or lords controling parts of it) ruling it and Lolth however in time became the ruling Demon lord controling most of the 66th level. The Demonweb became the area of Lolth's personal area of control that extends though much of the 66th level. Vhaeraun and Eilistraee might still control a small section of the 66th level though Vhaeraun's main area of control/home is/was Colothys/Ellaniath and Eilistraee's is/was Nidavellir/Svartalfheim.

| The other thing to keep in mind is even within a plane, a god has control over their domain. Lolth could secure her "portion" of the Demonweb pits against Vhearun, unless called to the place by someone else. Selvetarm is Lolth's champion, more or less bound to her will, and thus likely has a "passcard" to come and go from the domain, especially to defend her. |

And when Vhaeraun starts to "knock" on Lolth's door, I'm sure Selvetarm came running. Question, though, why would her domain allow a follower of Vhaeraun in, then? She most likely knew that his priests could allow him access - I'm surprised she didn't bar them from entering as well. I know she was weakened at the time, but it was still strong enough to prevent Vhaeraun, so why not his priests?

P.s. - Shouldn't there be a Spoilers tag on this? |

In your home you notice an unwanted person trying to enter, you do not notice an unwanted insect. Vhaeraun is much larger in power and has a divine aura, a mere Drow is much smaller in power and does not have a divine aura. The deities does not know all their followers and those that follow another instead. They are not that powerful. Also if Vhaeraun can have false Priestess in his service while Lolth believes they serve her, it should not be too hard to pretend to be a Lolth follower with simalar tactic. |

Good point. I just thought that she might have had a better warning system in place for invaders, especially at this very crucial moment in her divine history. If I were going to redefine myself and would be that vulnerable during those moments - I would make sure I was protected from all forms of invasion - even from the insects.
