Well under older rules yes, however I believe current rules prevent a crit because the ship is not living. *grin*
Best place to look for this is plant types, seeing how a ship is made from plants *Grin*

Most sailors do tend to say ships live, however setting that aside.
Undead can not be crit either and they clearly are dead. Crits in 3.x is based on doing extra damage to living things. Just look at the things that can not be crited. |

A ship cannot take a crit. Here's why:
1. A critical hit reflects a well aimed blow that hits a vital area of a living creature's anatomy, thus dealing more damage.
2. A more powerful hit that hits at just the right angle, etc., to an object, building, or vehicle, is reflected by rolling a higher number on the damage roll.
Going back to number 1, you could say that you deal damage to other parts of the ship if you hit support pieces, etc. For example, you could say that hitting a roof-support in the bowels of the ship is a "critical hit" because it affects the ship's "anatomy" more. So you could say that you not only deal damage to this piece, but you also deal half damage to other areas that it's supporting, or something like that. |
Goblins? *Slash* *Scream* *Thunk* What goblins? |

Ships cannot be criticalled NORMALLY.
If you really wanted to be able to do this, you could design a spell, or just use this one that I whipped up right here.
Shipstrike
Transmutation Level: Druid 2, Paladin 2, Ranger 2, Sor/Wiz 3, Wujen 3 Components: V,S Casting Time: 1 Standard Action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: 1 round/level
For the duration of this spell, you may critically hit boats. The spell confers no other benefits to you versus non-boat objects.
Shipstriking: A weapon with this feature may critcally hit boats. The enhancement confers no other benefits vs. non-boat objects. This enhancement is worth a +1 Bonus. |

I realize that I'm new here and don't have access to all the realmslore that others might, but if you hit a ship near the waterline with a fireball and the crew can't get to it, isn't that the same as a critical hit? The ship's going down wether you like it or not. Or is this more a question of semantics? If the axe in question does not only enough damage to open a monsterous hole, but has flameburst as well, wouldn't that do the same thing as a fireball at the waterline? |
If the rest of humanity were only as smart as my familiar...... |

If you destroy a section of a ship's hull(using the rules from the Arms and Equipment Guide), then the ship does start to take on water-but it's still not a critical hit, as that's a specific game term. |
