Anyone able to give me a rough idea how much it would cost to have a piece of art done?

The piece would be Half an A4 page in size and it would be in colour

Oh at first I thought you were talking about using art skill. Actual Pictures or images range greatly in price in part dependent of what is desired and in part how popular that artist is. I suspect you could have some aspiring artists do a simple work for you for a price of 25, if it is more elaborate or detail soungt the price will be at least 100 and could be much higher depending on artist.

What type of half page of of colour art are you seeking to comision?

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

I was kicking around the idea of having a piece of art done featuring one of the scenes from my Unofficial Jhaamdath project

The work would be around the size of the Art on the Front cover of the 3ed FR source books.

Would depend on the Artist mainly. Not sure if there is a "set standard" for prices.

Being an art connoisseur myself, I can tell you this:

Art depends on alot of 'variables'. First, the artist himself. Much like clothing, name means everything. The bigger the name, the higher the price.

Now, I'm assuming you are not planning to commission Jeff Easley or Tony Di'Terlizzi. For a non-famous artist (your 'starving artist' type), he/she will base their price on size, complexity, deadline, and your desire. Yes, haggling is definitely going to come into play. So, basically it comes down to what you want, when you want it, and what they can reasonibly expect to get out of you. I don't mean to make it sound like artists are 'used car salesmen', but in their place, what would you do?

I would suggest looking over their portfolio first, and research what their work has sold for in the past. This should give you a good idea of what to expect.

Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast answer.
