Poll Question:
What should the DC of a Knowledge (geography) skill check be for knowing something about the nation of Lantan?
Imagine that the two following Dalesmen from Highmoon hear somebody mentioning Lantan in the market:
- a Seeker of Oghma (Clr1, Int 16) with Knowledge (geography) +6 ((+3 Int, 3 ranks)) - a commoner (Com1, Int 10) with 0 ranks in Knowledge (geography), that is, +0.
Edit: Did change Daggerdalesmen from Highmoon to Dalesmen from Highmoon ... So ashamed

Define "something"
If its a "Has the character heard of Lantan" then probably a DC 5 if your asking for more detailed knowledge then the DC needs to rise accordingly
In short I need more info |

Ok I dont think a knowledge Geography check would do him any good. If you where checking to see if he knew where Lantan was then yes Id give him a knowledge Geography check but your question is with regard to religion. So he should make either a knowledge Religion check or a Knowledge Local: Lantan.

Hi Dargoth and Warlocko,
The definition of "something", in the above case, could be something like the following:quote: "Yes, I have heard of Lantan. It is a nation far from the Dalelands, somewhere to the west.".
Maybe, I did not formulate myself well enough. Based on the following description (SRD 3.5), it is possible to answer a question, that is, to know something, if the DC is 0 - 10.quote: Untrained: An untrained Knowledge check is simply an Intelligence check. Without actual training, you know only common knowledge (DC 10 or lower).
So, in one way, I would like to know, wheter you define the above limited knowledge about Lantan, as something that is regarded as common knowledge or not. |

I would say that even the commoner had probably heard of Lantan and knew it was off to the west, but he could not tell you much more than that. Perhaps a trader with some goods from Lantan passed through, and he could recognize the language spoken if he heard it again.
I would put a DC 10 on "Yeah I heard of it." And A DC 12 on "It is somewhere west o' here." And a DC 15+ for more information than that. |

By the way Fletcher, which Faerűnian country, if any, would you consider so remote and unknown that knowing "something" (as defined above) would have a DC of 11+? |
