Does anybody know the limits of the Chosens' ability to hear the next few words spoken after their name? Specifically:
Does the speaker need to have the particular Chosen in mind when he/she says the name, or can the Chosen hear references to other people in the Realms with the same name? (e.g. Elminster Bucktooth, the neighbor's halfwit son)
Can a Chosen "tune out" incoming message traffic? It seems that, given the combined population size of all races who would have knowledge of the Chosen of Mystra, they would receive quite a lot of "tells".
In fact, couldn't a military commander in an army facing a Chosen of Mystra just have his troops constantly say the Chosen's name over and over, confusing and disorienting the mage -- the equivalent of a magical denial of service attack!? (Storm Silverhand, booga booga booga. Storm Silverhand, booga booga booga...)
Do any common folk request aid from the Chosen of Mystra, much in the manner of modern mass flockings to faith healers and lottery winners? (my son has cancer, can you spare $10,000?)

They can tune it out, so said the Seven Sisters sourcebook if I recall right. I'm also going to say they hear names that are like thiers.
Commanders could do that but remember most do not know what the abilities of the Chosen ARE! |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

The Chosen can hear the next nine words spoken after their name.
Yes, they can 'tune out' this ability, much as you could 'tune out' someone speaking in a crowded room. So, no, this could not be used as a distraction. |

Also, I think you have to put a certain amount of concentration into this (ex. thinking of the facial features of the Chosen) for this to work. After all, someone like Elminster would go crazy from all the times people mention his name and he wouldn't even be able to recognize which ones are important and which ones aren't. |
