Fear not to tread among the stars.
We got it right, and they got it wrong.

Yesterday I was reading a ten year old book about "world building" which discussed the problems of a world in a binary stellar system. Today it was publicly announced that a sub-Jovian-sized planet in a trinary system has been discovered. The planet orbits one star close-in, and a binary pair orbits beyond it. Read and be amazed: http://www.nature.com/news/2005/050711/full/050711-6.html. An animated view of a triple sunset followed by planet set, as seen from a hypothetical moon of the planet is at http://www.nature.com/news/2005/050711/multimedia/050711-6-m1.html.

The wacky planets of Spelljammer now seem far less fantastic than they once did. Someday a space probe may report that the "edge" of your universe is covered with enormous, unreadable runes. When that day comes....

... but such things men were not meant to know!

While this is interesting, I'm afraid I'm not seeing a clear Realms connection...

"Tis more for for those who Spelljam or Planewalk than whose who remain Toril-bound. I placed it in "Running the Realms" so that those who have been holding back wonders for fear of being "unscientific" might be emboldned and embiggened.

And I add this link, too, as food for cogitation....: http://www.pnsn.org/NEWS/PRESS_RELEASES/SerpentStories.html.

"Giants strode through the sky
And hurled mountains at one another
And defied the Gods."

Dr. Ruth S. Ludwin and her team have documented earthquakes in the Seattle area as far back as 1700 through a careful study of native stories, even discovering a long-buried landmark of which a story told.

Ed having told us this week that the Netherese not only sheared off mountain tops, but tore whole mountain ranges down to their roots, the stories of the northwest Indians may be adaptable by a DM to plant seeds of stories of Netheril's doings without having to resort to telling players that, "Local legends say that the Netherese tore down a mountain here." Who tore it down? Ancient skywalking giants who fought and killed the gods. Rather more flavorful, I think.
