Well met

Please see the note below, passed on to me from Steven Schend, to honor the memory of Dave Sutherland, who i'm sure many of ye will know the works of...

quote:
From Steven Schend

I sent this invite to many old cohorts at TSR and we're hoping to get a lot of old friends in attendance. I send this on to you as you're people in the gaming industry and/or fandom whose lives were also touched by Dave Sutherland and his artwork. Feel free to spread the word and let's see how many folks Dave reached both in life and after his early passing.

For those fans who want to do something in Dave Sutherland's memory in
thanks for his foundation work and early designs of nearly every D&D
visual, get together with friends and raise a glass in his honor next
Friday evening July 8 (or any time next weekend) and think on how Dave
touched your lives. (For me, I'll always remember that Paladin in
Hell artpiece and the original bugbear illo....)

For those who wish to help, Harold Johnson, an old manager from TSR,
is pulling together an art scholarship in Dave's name and is taking
donations of all sizes.

Dave Sutherland Memoriam
July 8, 2005

Dave Sutherland died a few weeks back, and most of us have either worked with him in years past or simply been inspired by his artwork from the earliest days of D&D and TSR.

Join many of us across the country in celebrating Dave's life while connecting with friends new and old. Please assemble your own groups and raise a glass or share a meal in Dave's memory. Many of us will convene on Lake Geneva on July 8, while other parties will take place that same weekend in Washington and a few other states.

Contact Harold Johnson if you wish to make donations to an art scholarship fund in Dave's name. We're hoping to collect enough that we might make this a permanent scholarship awarded at GenCon or some other convention annually.

Even if you can't make it, feel free to RSVP to this post and share your favorite memory of DCS III.

Looking forward to seeing folks in Lake Geneva; for those too far away, take digital photos and we'll look into making a website or blog for photos of Dave's memoria and link it to blogs and sites of interest to ex-TSR-wage-slaves and others in the industry.

Be well, all, and let's raise our glasses to Dave one last time.

Thank you greatly for sharing this with us Steven, and to Big Al as well for posting it here at Candlekeep.

Certainly, my sympathies go out to Dave Sutherland's family, and to all those who knew him personally. Although many of us here will not have had the rare opportunity to speak with him either face to face or online, we have all at some point in our gaming careers felt him reach out to us through his incredible artistic talent. Some of which have graced the covers and pages of many D&D supplements in the past.

I know that the Paladin in Hell piece will continue to remain a particular favorite of mine, which only serves to remind me of the wonderful spirit for creativity that has now been lost to us. While we are diminished by this loss, we are honoured at the same time -- honoured by being allowed to share in Dave's unique vision.

I know this scribe will surely miss his work, and I will treasure the few group conversations I had the opportunity to experience with him over on the PSML.

Let me take this moment to also raise my own glass, and salute Dave's spirit one more time...
