It is said in the Underdark HC that some Kuo-toas run a ferry services on the Dark Lake..
Do you think we need to understand that they actually drag some small boats while swiming ? With no winds (?) in there, the only other way to move a vessel would be to have some rowers..
Edit : I wished to attack the boat with a gang of scrags, but not to run a big melee with both players and kuo-toas..
Any help would help, my players are heading there next session. (They are on a trip to Mantol-Derith)

Well, "running a ferry service" could mean anything from towing to poling to using magical winds to simply not attacking you when you use their boat. "That's a lotta gold you got, would hate to see it all on the bottom of the lake..."
I recall that at the end of "Daughter of the Drow" there were some boat scenes in the Underdark, that might be a good reference point. |

As Kuo-toas can breath air there is no reason that a ferry would be towed by swimers.

"Darklake: South and east of Mantol-Derith, Darklake is a series of connected bodies of water that were formerly linked by waterfalls but are now governed by locks created by dwarven engineers. The caverns are used as a relatively safe passage by duergar (deep dwarves), although the place has its share of monsters (mainly freshwater trolls and a type of evil intelligent freshwater manta ray). There may be a portal that connects the Darklake to one of the underground rivers servicing Skullport, and if the portal and its activation key can be discovered, it would greatly facilitate trade between the Underdark and the surface. "
A Ferry certainly could be set up on any of the pools of water. I suspect the duergar cntrol the locks these days. |

My main language is French and I don't understand what a "lock" mean in this context.
I think the boat will operate with Grimlocks (slaves of Kuo-tuas) rowers, what do you think ?

A boat elevator, that riases and lowers a boat or ship. Part of a canal system used to travel over mountians like the Panama Canal system.quote:

They will have a nice passenger with them, an Ilithid.. that will take good diplomacy (or charms effects) with locks operated by duergars  |

Well the locks need to be maintained, maintained in good repair by somebody. It would be my guess that the duergars would operate them and collect a toll.
Much like the ferry a little gold can buy some aceptance. I would picture both willing to deal with anyone, just use more caution with the less trusted travelers.
As far as it goes you could have the Kuo-toas controling some of the locks, or for that matter decide not to have locks.
The trying to charm a keeper of the lock and failing certainly should result in a battle. |
