One aspect of DMing is the requirement to come up with a ****load of names for NPCs, dragons, unique weapons and the like. So, for the sake of sharing and inspiration, I begin this thread where DMs and players can post all the names that they have come up with during the course of time that they bother to post.
I will go and compile me own list now.

Hmmmm. I tend to have trouble in this area. When i find a name (Salius Kai, Cantrus Drought, Keises Tech) I tend to stick with them for a long time. This string will come in very handy for me. Thank you for making it Echon. |

Have you tried the name generators (Dwarf, Elf and Drow) which you can get download from Alaundo's Library.
In addition, you might like to have a look at Kate Monk's Onomastikon here:
http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/
I'm using some of the resources here to produce a human name generator (selectable by Realms region). Hopefully this name generator should be posted to Rad within the next week. |

Indeed, names can be quite hard to come up with. When I play simple DnD games with my friends we usually stick with simple names like Bob and Phil but those games are practically never serious. |

I'm using an excel spreadsheet to randomly generate names and family names from a list I maintain with names encountered in official products or names players have come up with for their charcters and background. Resources used so far are Lands of Intrigue, Volo's guide to the Sword Coast and Volo's Guide to the North.
Kahonen, did I send this spreadsheet to you yet...? |

Yeah, I have tried them but I did not like the names. Half of the pronounciations were impossible.

Echon: Which specific programs are you referring to and can you give me some idea of which "pronounciations were impossible"? It's not a problem anyone else has referred to. |

When thinking up some names I often browse the net. I just look for common names that I like and combine them or add letters to give them an elvish (or other race) feeling. I also like to put words together from foreign languages (especially Greek and Latin do well). This way the name can actually have a meaning. Though I tend to combine the words in a way that does not leave their meaning very visible.
I hope I'm making clear here what I'm trying to say I have the feeling to be a little vague.
As an example: Ditalidas is built out of two Greek or Latin words (I don't remember ) The first part means power and the second means fire (or the other way around) I left some of the last letters of the word away as I did with some of the first letters of the last word. And there I had a beautiful unique name.(At least I think it's a beautiful name)
I’m still being vague right…? Oh well, As long as it makes just a little sense...
Cheers!

Names for me is the hardest part of DMing as well. I usually go trough books that I have to find something and will combine names. What bothers me the most though is when I start a campaign with my frineds they seat forever trying to think up something. When I force the issue they come up with stupid names like "Curry Comb". A name my frined gave his halfling thief when the DM assigned him to care for the horses in the kings army. It was a joke that stuck and so that friend never takes the characters name really sereous.

This is a site that I have found and started to take Elven names from. I really do not use the hobbit name generator since I don't have hobbits in my world. You all might find it interesting.

I will look the programs up when I get home - a week from now.
Regarding the pronounciations, they were not actually impossible. That is just me exagerating quite a bit.

I must admit that I forgot about this thread. Browsing Candlekeep reminded me of it.
The name generators I have used are the ones found in the Wondrous Treasures section, all written by Ron Pearsall (you?). I generally do not like them but have found the Treasure Horde Generator and Travel Calculator highly useful.

Hmmm... Echon, could you be more specific then 'generally'? That might be a bit more helpful to Ron...
Also another source of names can be the name generators publsihed a while back in Dragon Magazine... I can't recall the exact numbers, but do remmber there were at least a dwarven, gnome/halfling and a dragon name generator. |

Jeezalaweeza! That's a lot of names!!! And those are only the ones you've made for humans in one region?
I'm no DM, but I have come up with names occasionally for the FR computer games. My standard four-person party is:
Garnet, human female paladin
Reorn, male dwarf fighter
Benedick, male human cleric
Raven, female elf mage
The fact that the computer games are less "serious" in such regards as actual DMing has led to some other names . . . Gimli, Sir George, and even a Bookwyrm or two. |

That's correct, as I mentioned, one of my sources for picking names was Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast, which has served as a source for the creation of the BG games as well.
Since like in the real world, a name appears many times, I'm reusing them, just with different last names. Gives a more 'natural' feel for the world as a whole IMO. |

I do not really know what to say. I guess I simply tend not to like the names they create - at least as far as the dwarven and drow names go. The ordinary elven names are fairly good actually - I suppose I still prefer making them up myself. Another issue is that even though the entire terminology is in English, we keep everything else in Danish, uncluding names. Those elven names sure sound a lot better in English.
I hope I have not offended you, kahonen, because those programs are well made. As already mentioned I make great use of the Treasure Horde Generator - I tend to like the random element.

I actually like to browse to foreign dictionaries. Preferably of languages I do not understand myself... That way I can pick out words that appeal to me and the name of my character actually has a meaning...
I just don't want to run into people who do understand that language |
