(first things first, contact for this pbem will be [kaladorm@gmail.com]) For those of you that don't know me, I've been playing in the Realms for about 2 or 3 years now in a campaign with Reefy. I thought it was high time I gave DMing a try, since it looks like good fun, and is a nice chance to write some interesting stories and see how characters respond. After being in Hammers great campaign I realised email would be the perfect forum to try DMing first. I did have a lovely speech prepared but as regularly happens on candlekeep I managed to lose it in my multitude of browser windows :) I'll do my best to cater to the needs of the players, I know things will be a bit different with people from different places with different house rules etc. but hopefully things will all gel quite well. I'll be learning as we go along to in finding which methods work best, but I hope for things to run quite smoothly from the start. Lurkers will be welcome, but they may miss out on the messages sent personally to a character rather than the whole group. I'll just send the whole group emails to the lurkers as well.
So without further ado, the basics:
1) We tend to play something like v3.2 at the moment. I have access to the system reference document but the majority of the sourcebooks I have access to are 3.0. This won't be as complicated as it seems, consider we are playing v3.0 with some of the more notable adjustments (explained later in this post, any queries either before or during pbem just ask )
2) Psionics: I will include these in the realm but mostly for PCs or NPCs. They will not feature heavily, and I will treat them essentialy as spells (spellcraft=psioncraft, dispel psionics = dispel magic etc.) There will be limited psionic monsters and items in the campaign, but players may pick a psionic class if they wish. Psionics and Psionic items will be as detailed in the system reference document (since they seemd quite awkward and not very nice in v3.0)
3)Setting: The Year is 1374, year of the lightning storms. The campaign will take place in the dalelands (the immediate start being in Battledale). I have volos guide to hand
4) List of books I have access to. Please consider these if you wish to use something not in any of these books, i.e. send me the information if you wish to use something I know nothing about :) System reference document Forgotton realms campaigns setting players guide to faerun monster manual I and II Monsters of faerun dm guide 3.0 the silver marches serpent kingdoms unnaproachable east defenders of the faith masters of the wild song and silence tome and blood sword and fist magic of faerun races of faerun faiths and pantheons (various 2e books for reference)
5)Miscellaneous rules: -I tend to leave out food with regards to survival. Any party this level will usually be able to sustain themselves in the environment or be well organised enough and rich enough that it seems negligible to put in. You may of course use food and drink as normal in roleplaying, but mechanics wise it is irrelevant. -Dice rolling. I'm as yet unsure how to do this. Whether to have you state your actions and I roll all dice for you, or as we do in Hammers campaign and roll dice for our attacks/damage/skill checks etc and have the results behind the scenes still (and recieve some flavour text along with the mechanical result). Once the party is set up we can decide on which works best for everyone concerned. -Other things which I'm sure I'll remember as we go along :)
6) Characters: This is quite a big section The party will be a generally good party (that includes neutral). -Character level range is between 5-7 -If you're unsure about a character concept (race, class, viability etc) please email me and provided the concept isn't too wild and you can provide both a good reason for the character being there and a good history I'm happy to include it in the campaign. -I'll be using a point buy system of 32 points. - Characters may recieve one free regional feat that they fit the requirements for -Base classes will follow v3.0 rules. With the exception of the Ranger and the Monk which follow v3.5 rules. -Basic feats genreally follow 3.5 rules (e.g. weapon finesse). The books listed above are generally v3.0 so consider using other feats/prestige classes as listed there -Additional: for specialist wizards they may use the specialist wizard feats created by myself, listed in the skills and feats of the realms thread in candlekeep -Skills: as 3.5ed (nb. perform still has seperate ranks for each skill) -Characters have 10,000gp to spend at creation -Other than that just create a character and if there is a problem with it or you want to question the use of an item/feat etc just email me and I'll offer suggestions or approve/disprove choices
7) I check my emails regularly so staying in touch shouldn't be a problem. I can generally put out a long email once or twice a week. and shorter emails (including personal emails to individual characters) and quick clarifications or conversations, will generally follow immediately or after a day. Also once the party is going we can decide on things like perhaps using an IM service at certain specific times to progress. I'd like the campaign to advance well and have everyone be quite responsive but by no means do I expect it to take over peoples lives . So the intention is to keep emails flowing smoothly but without too much pressure, we all have RL things that do (and should) get in the way sometimes.
If you're interested let me know here. Look forward to hearing from you.

I don't want to take away any potential spots for someone interested in joining, but if you need another player to round out a party let me know. If not I'd love to lurk at the least Kal. |

Sure, must remember to be nice to you Hammer or I might find Kaladorm the dwarven bard meeeting a sticky end in your campaign just kidding. You're welcome of course. Had 2 others show an interest already but one of thems too lazy to post. Will give it some time whilst everyone makes their characters and storylines but 4 is enough to get started with (but not a maximum). |

Ok we definitely have enough players to start out. If everyone could email any character creation questions to me if you have any or otherwise post their characters here as well as email me a copy that would be great. I imagine it will take a few weeks to get everyone's characters ready, stats wise and history wise. Hopefully it won't take too much longer and we can get started on this storyline ;)
A short history of your character (2-5 paragraphs) would be very useful. As well as why your character has come to be adventuring in Battledale. If there is a reason for your character being in the village of Hap then please give it, otherwise I'll integrate them into the storyline myself, whichever you prefer. |

Should we keep everything hush-hush except with you for now Kal? Also, what charcter classes are out there, or what do we need? |

Feel free to discuss it. I was going to keep things secret to discourage going for a character that 'fits' rather than a character you'd like to play. But everyone wants to know so I'm not keeping things secret any more :) We have a wizard and a cleric confirmed. Some sort of spellcaster in the works too. |

I'm thinking of a Ranger/Bard. Human or half-elf, maybe elf. I know, Hammer not playing a dwarf is like a PB&J sandwhich without the PB! |

Ranger/bard sounds like an interesting combination. Do something different, it's always fun do something unusual, hence my dwarven paladin. Unlike this one of course, where I'm playing a cleric *again*. |

So, now that Kal has surrendered to the idea of sharing character concepts, what does everyone have so far. I'm not trying create a character to fill a hole, but I would be interested in knowing what we have so far. Reefy is the Cleric (of?) Lysander is either a Fighter/Ranger, or a Ranger/Rogue ? is a wizard Me, well Ranger/Bard is a cool concept I've played around with since 2nd edition, but maybe a Bard/Sorcerer/Fighter or Ranger is what I'm looking for. |

I think Fireheart is submitting a couple of characters to me this weekend. I believe either a Psion or a Wizard. Since you guys get all the fun of creating your PCs I've been creating some NPCs alongside hehe. Expect to meet some very interesting people.

I'm thinking of having at least one level of Cleric, a follower of Savras. |

Do you still have room. I warn you I have never done this before so you will have to take baby steps with me. If you dont have room is there any way I could like spectate or something so I could find out what these games are like? |

You'd be welcome to join of course. If you'd like to lurk then I'll add you to my list (please send a blank email to kaladorm@gmail.com) otherwise feel free to join. It should be easy to pick up, it'll mostly involve more roleplaying, the mechanical elements such as skills and spells etc I will roll for during combat and tell you the result (so long as you tell me what it is you wish to do). Most people have done their history/personality/character concept by now so if you're happy to come come up wiht a concept and history by friday then you'll be ready to go wth everyone else Email me and I'll update you with what you've missed so far, the campaign hasn't started yet but will do as of this weekend assuming everyone gets back to me

bah wish Candlekeep didn't wipe your text box on hitting tne back button.
A friend in the campaign hasn't played pbem before, so don't worry that you'll be new to it. The majority is just getting into your chacracter. Also I'll be learning as we go along as DM, and the players will be getting used to my style too. If you like wait for a few emails from the others so you get an idea of whats going on and the format of emails. But you shouldn't find it too much of a problem |

What level is everyone keeping to? Kal, you mentioned between 5 and 7, but which do you prefer the balance of the party be leaning towards? |

Well everyones gone for the max lvl 7, I just added a short range in case someone wanted to play a weaker character for roleplaying purposes. Also so we don't have any characters with like a +5 LA :)

Hey all,
Sorry I hadn't commented earlier - Candlekeep was fritzing on me at work.
I am currently planning on playing a psychic warrior half-dragon/maenad. Gives Kaladorn and myself some experience w/ psionics.
I'll try to have the character sheet to Kaladorn today.

Character sheets aren't as big an issue. Adam has finished his so far but otherwise no problems, but assuming I get Chris's character by tonight then expect some exciting emails tomorrow morning I'm excited |
