Has anyone played either Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, or the recent Demon Stone console games? I'm just curious on the background for them, especially the BG title. I know that it has nothing to do with the Bhaalspawn Saga, and the only similarity is the city of choice...but what's the plot and storyline like for these? Are they worth getting, or simply another hack and slash game, tarted up with the Realms logo?

DA is pure hack&slash and I have to admit I never finished it.

Demonstone plays like the LOTR games, if you played them. It's totally linear and is definately hack&slash, but has a great storyline to play through and lets you customize your characters in very cool ways.

Just the abiltity to play as all three characters in the game makes it worth the while! SirUrza is absolutely right, if you played and loved the LOTR games you will defineatly be right at home with demon stone!

Dark Alliance is hack and slash. It is more linear than the original classic Baldur's Gate.

As Hack and slash goes it is a good one though and I ended up playing it through to the end TWICE, once as the dwarf fighter and once as the elf sorcerer.

It also supposed to be using 3rd edition rules but for the most part that just means it uses feats which bear a passing relationship to 3E feats (i.e. some have the same name)

Dark alliance was a great game, though unlike D&D you don't have many choices in the game, it's basically following the storyline. Dark alliance 2 is better, more choices and items, and a lot longer time in gameplay.

Demon stone was also good, yet I found it heard to switch between all three characters at the same time, and trying to keep all three of the health meters charged. However, if you are a fan of the LOTR games you would like this game.

Part of beating Demon Stone is knowing which character to use when, shouldn't need to worry about the health meter of the other characters when they're AI controlled because you shouldn't need to be switching a lot.

It's a neat story, but not a great game. I'd sooner recommend Prince of Persia, God of War, or the LOTR games that play exactly like Demonstone.. but better.

I'm currently looking into God of War, and I must say I'm impressed. Dark Alliance I was a great game and I still enjoy beating it. Dark Alliance II is also a wonderful game, my only complaint was the ridiculously long (as far as I'm concerned) dungeons. Prince of Persia is, from my point of veiw, very similiar to the classic D&D dungeon adventure, I enjoy plugging my character in the place of the prince, and am currently playing it again. LOTR, I have one comment: exciting and an overall great game. As for Demonstone I have yet to purchase it, so I have no comments.

Yeap, when companies make a game to take full advantage of a particular system's hardware, that doesn't translate well into portability.

Dark Alliance (I and II) was pretty good, though I was disappointed with its fairly linear game play that Baldur's Gate II so famous. Demon Stone was much too short, in my opinion, and doesn't have a high replay value (after all, you just use the same trio over and over). What's more, it's nearly impossible for any D&D game to deviate more from D&D rules than Demon Stone (spells are classified as ranged weapons with unlimited ammo; once you gain a new spell, you cannot switch to your old ones; and then there's the Weave-defying way to "charge" a spell for more damage).

I have plaeyd both and i really like them. Dark Alliance has medium lenghteness, it has good graphics. There are HArpers and Zhentarims which makes it intersting. It's really good game.

And Demon Stone. It's quite short but very precious to me. I play it often. The story of the Deom Stone is sooooo good. I really like it. And Illius is maybe my favourite character, he's very nice.

Demon Stone was amazing. Story, characters, moves, action. Okay it it not what FR fans waited. But it's fine by me. Even i don't like Drizzt, in game i like him. Moving like a dream. I wish they'll make a second one like Demon Stone, with a Cunningham story. Danillo or Liriel looks good on screen too.

Rannek, the fighter from the game, was featured in Salvatore's Hunter's Blades trilogy, so supposedly it could be canon.

If it is Cannon, is Blackstaff tower (and to a lesser extent, Waterdeep) still suffering from having Githyanki and Slaad infest the place? We can assume that Khelbin has survived (with his groovy Patric Stewart voice) but there was some indication that at least part of Blackstaff Tower was destroyed.

Anything backing this up?

It's my understanding that while some characters from computer games may appear in established Realmslore, that's it -- they're canon, but nothing else from the games is canon.

As has been pointed out, it's kinda difficult to declare something canon when it's got a multitude of different endings.

Demon Stone and the Dark Alliance series don't have multiple endings though. Well, they do if you count the fact that the heroes die as an ending. However, they are very linear, and either game would be easy enough to add as cannon material. This could easily include the wonderful hook about some Mulhondri mummy is on it’s way to Baldur’s Gate, and the fact that Khelbin did some kung-fu against an ancient red dragon right outside his own tower.

My look on ALL video games...

They're as canon as my DM's campaign.

Cause that's all video games are, is someone's campaign you're playing out. They're always over the top, always ignored by printed product, and always introduce continuity issues. So best to just ignore that.

Playing Drizzt in it was awesome. I just wish Arilyn was in it when I saw Dan.

To me Dark Alliance was just another boring hack and slash. I beat it the day I got it! It only took 7 hours! It was extremely linear and I really just didn't like it. Well thats what I think anyway.

I noticed nobody mentioned Drizzt and Artemis are available for play after you complete Dark Alliance?

I completed both DA and Demonstone. They're alright, but probably will only appeal to Realms fans? Cuz they're really not that great as compared to other games of the same genre, even LOTR is better.
