Not that I heard and I'm only 2 hr's away and we usually get Canada's weather patterns. Damn great lakes! |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

As far as I know (and I'm canadian, not far from where Ed dwells if I believe what I read) there has not been any major weather disaster lately... I guess we can only speculate and blame Shar for keeping this secret hers ;) |

Due to the "silence of Ed" I propose we form an adventuring party to travel to Eds home plane (more commonly known as Canada) to find out why hes not granting Realmslore!

I live in Ontario, and we actually had a pretty strong storm (and a small tornado) here the other day... though I think Ed lives quite a ways off, so I couldn't say if anything similiar happened there (hopefully not).

Yep, Ed's about 1/3 to 1/2 a province away from that storm(it was really fun to walk home through, by the way!) |

I'm not lovely and I'm not hooded, but I can pass along the following to the restless scribes amidst the stacks ...
=== Hello to all scribes. Ed Greenwood here, with an apology for my silence and a request for your understanding.
At the end of October, my wife and I took a rare jaunt across the province to visit with one of my sisters in her new abode. We rarely get away from home these days, and so took the opportunity to cram shopping stops at specific stores, attending a few plays at Stratford before the season winds down, and attending a retirement dinner for a longtime library co-worker into our trip. Ah, the joys of multitasking.
When we returned home I charged right back into my day job and the joys of trying to write a 110,000 word novel in two weeks. (Try it sometime. It's certainly . . . exciting.) At the same time, the Wizards floodgates opened up again: flurries of calls and e-mails from designers, editors, and novelists to check this, review that, and provide timely Realmslore. I love doing this (hey, I've done it for you folks almost daily for two years, right?), but Wizards MUST come first, or I'm impeding the flow of published products that keep the Realms rolling along for everyone to enjoy. At the same time, health problems arose in my family and in me, a new round of radio interviews to publicize City of Splendors started up, the end-of-season yardwork involved in acres of gardening landed on my lap - - and the lovely Lady Hooded stopped calling and e-mailing. She is my gentle, loving cattle prod. She prods and I groan, turn back to the stack of Realmslore queries, answer one of them, and turn back to getting on with the novel.
The first Knights novel is hard going. I CAN'T just tell their saga, because Wizards (silly people) won't agree to letting me publish about two hundred full-length novels, with footnotes and chronologies and maps. Instead I have to weave a slimmed-down story that matches all the Realmslore references already published and doesn't disappoint too many of you by leaving important events offstage. So I'm drowning in nostalgia, and running out of time, and writing writing writing, and loving it.
Wherefore a weekend passed before I even noticed my lovely tormentor (if she teases you guys, think what she does to ME) had fallen silent. Another few days passed (remember, I have to drive 40 miles to a library and work for half of most days, and then drive back home, doing chores on the trip and squeezing writing into early mornings, late evenings, and so on) before I did anything about it.
THO has two jobs, one of which we can talk about a little bit (the editing one) and another that we can't. She went on assignment on the stay-silent job, and got injured, and is still incommunicado, though I've been assured she's going to be all right. In the meantime, I've got five big projects to get done before the new year rolls around, the first draft of the first Knights novel being top priority (and due in less than a week, now!). I just CAN'T stop and have fun doing Realmslore replies right now, though I promise to return as soon as I can. The moment the lovely Lady Hooded is back in business, I'm sure she'll pester me in her usual irresistable way, and I'll spit out an answer or two for her to post here. I intend to celebrate finishing the novel by taking a day to really plow deep into your questions, but then again I might get run over by a raging wheelbarrow tomorrow.
So please bear with us both. Technical troubles are merely temporary.
Ed

Thanks Eric .
Reading over this... I'm reminded of the reasons why I appreciate the great work of the Old Bearded One and why I value his input here at Candlekeep so much. He's all about life, the Realmslore, and everything!

Many thanks for bringing this news over to us, Eric, and for Ed to take the time to provide us with the facinating list of chores and updates . Please pass on our best wishes to Ed and to hope that things are all well again soon (and also that the Hooded Ones injuries are soon mended). |

I was going to come up with something suitably elaborate to say, but instead of writing something where I'm sure even I would lose my bearings I'll settle for saying: I third that! |

Hello-
Well - I too am glad to hear that everything is OK - or at least - headed towards that way. :)
I too know about the long drives to and from work.... 45 minutes or so each way - provided there is good weather - and since I live in a not-so-distant area from Mr Ed of the Green Wood - I can say that the weatehr here is somewhat - shall I say - Unforgiving... (* Kuje can back me up on that one! LOL *)
The Sage's comment - "..........He's all about life, the Realmslore, and everything!....."
Good call! However - I hope we don't start just getting answers - and not have them tied into specific questions - I fear I would not be able to wait the time to figure out what questions went with what answers! :) :)

Vendui Hooded One and Ed!
Now, I had the pleasure to read Elminster's Daughter recently and while dusting off my older books, I glanced into the Heroes' Lorebook and read a bit about Myrmeen Lhal, amongst others. The book gives some detailed descriptions about various of our much loved heros, but, after reading the aforementioned novel, I was somewhat surprised to discern that Myrmeen was, back then, in her mid-40s. Given the events described in the novel (dated in the early 1370s, I would assume), she would be (at least) some 5 to 10 years older nowadays. My study of human physiology - far from being that extensive - lead me to believe that it would be rather difficult for her to ... ahem .. well ... you know, the happy time she spent with Vangherdahast near the end of the novel. Could it be then - given the fact that human females tend to keep the secret about their true ages close to their chests - that those two authors of the Heroes' Lorebook erred when writing down her age?
I noted the same thing with that lass called Cattie-brie, who was supposed to be in her late 30s close to the year of 1358 D.R.. That would send the companion of the well-known scimitar-wielder into her early 50s, now that we have 1374 D.R..
Hm ... maybe I read too much.

Neah, not too much reading. Good observations. We ought to see more (especially those belonging to the shorter lived races) known characters retire or die in the upcoming novels, source books etc. (like we have seen in the case of the late Azoun). It would be stretching suspense of disbelief if everyone suddenly has access to life extending magic and/or other life-prolonging devices... |

I've seen descriptions somewhere of what was described as a boil on the face of the earth, that concentrated corruption and evil energies, and could only be reduced in strength or neutralized for a short time. Has anyone else seen such a feature, and what book was it in? |

Ed, I've got a question about Castlemorn.
As I recall, the last official update for the release of this book was set for September:-

To give you a little more info, the text has been undergoing a bit of tweaking by Tom Knauss and Tim Hitchcock and is now in the final editing stage. I served as the art director for the first time with this book and I have to say that some of these images will knock your eyeballs out, especially when you see some of the scenic vistas that Gareth Verleyen did and some of the other stuff by a guy named Bruce Colero (remember that name, you will be seeing again in the future). As the book grows closer to being released, there will be previews and sneak peeks. :)
Oh yeah, we are planning to have at least a partial mock-up of the book at Gen Con if everything goes well.
I'm eagerly anticipating the development of this setting, so I'm curious as to its current status?

I just finished reading City of Splendors and had a tiny question from it... The cult. I want to know more about it :) Well ok it's more of a demand than a question ;) What are these gods that they worship? Rituals? Organization? Where are you likely to run into them? |

I'm not Ed, but I am working on an article about monster cults in general, and the Amalgamation cult in particular. When I have more info on the particulars, I'll post a note here, in my Q&A thread, and in the City of Splendors thread in the Novels section.

That's great news EC!
I was thinking about writing up a small organisation block for the Amalgamation cult to include in an upcomingCompendium, but I may just delay that now, at least until you can share more details about your efforts.

I know it's not Thanksgiving for Ed or Alaundo today, but as it is Thanksgiving day here in the US, I just wanted to give thanks to Ed for creating the Realms and for continuously sharing his wisdom and his passion here with us. Thank you Ed!
And I also wanted to give thanks to the Lovely Lady Hooded One for so diligently bringing us Ed's words and for her own insights, and, well for just being so darn lovely all the way around. Thank you lady Hooded One!
And to Alaundo for making such a wonderful home for us all here at Candlekeep! Thank you all! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! |

Oh, rest assured that trencherman that he is, Ed has already celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving and is girding himself for another round of feasting for the American one. Well, in the time he has after writing the second half of Swords of Eveningstar, planning the 2nd book in the trilogy, doing stuff on Castlemorn, writing a DRAGON article or two and reviewing other FR novels currently in the pipeline. The man walks around in his own personal 'time conduit' ...
