Amazon is selling Temple Of Elemental Evil for £8.97. I know most people hate it, but is it worth that small amount?

Guns don't kill people, magic missiles do.

*shrugs* Have not even seen it, so can not comment on contents.

However if people you trust do not think it worth it, odds are they are correct.

As for the price it does not strike me as that small.

A lot depends on what you might want from the product.

ToEE is mostly a turn-based tactical game; the RPG factors are there just for ornamental purposes. The initial release was incredibly buggy -- anything and everything from rule implementations to memory leaks that make latter parts of the game unplayable. Assuming that most of the bugs have been dealt with by now (gods, they better be after all this time, although I have no desire to go back and finish the game), the game still isn't that appealing. It depends on what you want. Its one and only claim to decency is the combat: dialogue is mediocre; voiceacting is hit-or-miss; story is non-existent (excuse me, why am I in this temple again? Apart from the fact that it's the only area I haven't visited?).

Not sure if adding a plug here will be a problem, so if it is, please mods, by all means delete.
Now back to what I was going to say. I liked the game. I liked the Circle of Eight patches because they fixed aspects of the game that were game breaking (Crash to Windows type). I also liked the ability to create weapons, armor, etc of worth. NWN just doesn't cut it for that. All in all, a fun game in my book (I just finished a Neutral Good party campaign).
The point? Buy the game, then get the Co8 patches and all the Atari patch releases, and you might find you enjoy it. Not a lot of RP as mentioned in other posts here, but fun nonetheless for me at least.

Not quite a lack of roleplaying choices here, I don't think. I've enjoyed hack-and-slash games (aka action RPGs) before, but the problem I have with ToEE that it doesn't even provide the most remote of purposes. Take Sacred, Diablo, or Dungeon Siege; they're all kill-this-loot-that fests, but each has a main storyline that gives you a reason as to why you should visit location A and then location B. I retain the opinion that ToEE isn't worth buying. Maybe pirated or torrent... *snorts*

Troika did much better with Vampires - The Masquerade: Bloodlines, IMO. I mean, if you're looking for a good RPG to play, you could do worse. And ToEE is definitely many times worse.

I just was offering a differing point of view is all (I only play DnD based RPG's, so can only speak from that point of view). I agree the "purpose" or the party quest for the most part is lacking in ToEE if you don't investigate/interact somewhat with the initial vignette in mind, but I found if I followed the trail of each layer of the investigation if you will (NG vignette starts after you kill a rogue who assailed and murdered the main Cleric of Cuthbert for the town of Homlett) you could actually find a reason to raid all of the areas available in the game. BUT and that is a big but, it would require lots of random "explorations" of homes to get the side quests that inevitably create much of your characters initial XP possibilities which I agree is somewhat, em, odd. That being said, Valdar, I enjoyed the character creation, and other aspects of the game, plus I did actually have fun, so MAYBE you will. Only one way to find out though huh? Hope you make the right choice for you in that regard.
