Spellshields and wards are common coin in the Realms, but I haven't seen much detail about them. Are there any sources that deal with constructing permanent defensive spells aside from mythals? I've read Volo's Guide to All Things Magical, but was looking for more recent methods. Perhaps specific spells, feats, or items necessary for their making, or commonly used guarding magics?

But what have all the passing years/Done, but breed new angers, fears?/Show me now an equal worth/To innocence I earned at birth.

Hmm. I dont think there's much in recent books. That other Volo's Guides have info on Wards, for example Volo's Guide to the North and also the Sword Coast mentions and details wards... There are other sourcebooks from 2e that mentions them also....

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

atm i have a similar problem:

my players are around level 9-10, most of them have acquired modest estates. especially the two mages of the group "enjoy" frequent visits from vengeful strangers (or not so strangers, in the case of the revenant... *g*) and became quite paranoid over the last sessions.

there is a bunch of spells for personal protetection, but what about houses? most players find raids of their homes when they are away adventureing harder to bear than the usual body injury that is a common part of cleaning out dungeons, so they are trying to find ways to ward their homes (and themselves, when at home) against dangers.

the spell wizard lock is not very helpful, for what use does a spell-locked door have when you open it yourself, spellbound by a vampires gaze? besides, it is a permanent nuisance when you have an apprentice who has to ask you every five minutes to open this or that door.
there´s the 6th level spell guards and wards (still playing 2nd edition), but it is hardly useful for a wizards home: who wants to have all corridors in his home filled with fog and webs?
magic mouth
has useful applications, but it is more or less all we could find in the 2nd edition sourcebooks (first and foremost: players handbook, tome of magic, spells&magic).

are you aware of useful "house-warding"- spells, or some magic items (preferably minor ones, or up to appr. 40.000 gp value limit)? i have no problems with downgrading stuff from 3e to 2e.

Go with the sources kuje31 mentioned. Cast a wardmist spell over your estate, and sit back and watch as intruders get pummeled by helmed horrors.

DMG has a list of traps, many of which are magical and could be considered under the heading "wards".

There seems to be two ways to create a permanent magical effect in an area.

The first is to use Permanency to anchor your chosen spell to an object or location. the downside of this is that the spell is always 'on' and can still be dispelled.

The second, costlier option is to create an immobile Wonderous Item to create the effect you require. The benefits are that these are only suppressed by a Dispell and can be set to activate only under certain circumstances.

Hope this helps

ooops.

For this kind of information in 3e, check out the Stronghold Builder's Guidebook, the Book of Challenges, and to a lesser extent, the Draconomicon and Frostburn.

Aside from existing 3rd edition spells which protect an area (i.e. Forbiddance, Hallow, Dimensional lock, Refusal, etc) as well as 3rd edition magic items (such as Weirdstones), much of the more famous “wards” in the Forgotten Realms will most likely be covered by Epic Spellcasting in the upcoming Ancient Empires sourcebook. Rich Baker has confirmed that the rules for creating Mythals, as well as mythal-like wards (i.e. the protections of Undermountain, Shoon, etc) will all be covered in a uniform fashion under the Epic Spellcasting system. He also mentioned that Silverymoon’s Mythal, which appears in Silver Marches and is briefly detailed in the Players Guide to Faerun (in a sidebar near the Spellguard of Silverymoon prestige class) will be used as the base example Mythal in that book.
