Has anyone read Heirs of Prophecy, book 5 of the Sembia Series by Lisa Smedman?

SPOILER

.
.
.
.
.
.

I was shocked to read the events that were described when Larajin first entered the Sembian capital of Ordulin!( I think its about chapter 3 or 4). The way the human citizens of Ordulin treated half-elven citizens . These half-elves had lived alongside the humans until the release of a new bill stating that half-elves are banished from the city just as elves are! The book goes on to describe how a half-elf's store was looted and the owner beaten by numerous humans as the city guard just laughed and stood by to watch! I have no quarms with the author for writing such (even though such extreme racism does happen in our world to this level, and beyond!), she did a great job and im loving the novel so far! I just never realised that Sembians were so brutal and the law just letting such things happen.

What are your views on this? Its really changed my opinion of Sembians! Maybe the author wanted the reader to favor the elves. The descriptions of the wild elves and their actions are very well written, by the way. So far, im with the elves for sure on this one!!!

Sembians are indeed very bigoted against elves, whom they distrust at best and hate at worst. The Uskevren and their household are exceptions to this rule, the children in particular because of the example of their father, Thamalon, who loves all things elven--and at least one particular elf a little more than he oughta!

Lisa's novel brings this conflict to the forefront, but you might notice little nods to it in the other novels, too. Sembia's a tough place if you're an elf or a half-elf.

Hi Dave, thanks for the info.

Im aware of the long standing conflict between Sembia and the elves of Cormanthyr, just the sudden turn against half-elves by the humans of Ordulin was shocked me . To think that they were likely trading together and possible exchanging pleasantries only the day before and then next theyre beating the person!

Your definately right in saying that the Uskevrens are an exception. I was impressed by Thamalons collection of elven workmanship from the first time I read about it, I imagine the room full of elven workmanship and I just wanna be there!!

Remember, though, that the Elves (particularly Wild Elves) have their own issues regarding humans. I can't say I really favor one side over the other in that respect. Aside from their prejiduces, I kind of like the Sembians. I find them more interesting than Dalesfolk.

It was the way that they treated the elves and so openly within the city! I could understand it if it had happened within the forests or lands outside of civilisation but the extreme hatred and violence in the nations capital was shocking (but made very good reading, well done Lisa Smedman )

Dave Gross, are the Uskevren's going to interact with the Selkirk family in the near future?

lowtech,

I know of no plans for a Selkirk/Uskevren encounter, but maybe Voronica or Paul knows otherwise.

Cheers,

Dave
