Hello all, I did a couple'a searches, and I couldn't find any threads discussing my personal playground, The Vast. So, nothing to do but to start one. Being sort of an outgrowth of the Living City campaign, there's been a TON of player development in this area, some of it contradictory, and there's a good amount of info available on the web, which is nice.
I'm starting a new campaign on the ashes of my old one (read my "Well Met" thread on the introduction forum for more), and I'm interested particularly in anyone's input on the halfling-dominated settlement of New Hope: Has it been mentioned in any canon products or fiction? Same for the surrounding area, as my campaign concentrated mainly on the area around the Fire River, from Raven's Bluff to Dragon's Falls.
And, for that matter, I'm interested in anyone's thoughts on running/playing in The Vast: your experiences, advice, little intpicking tidbits on the flavor of the land, that kinda thing. I'd love to see an ongoing discussion of this corner of Faerun.
One last question for you guys: Does anyone know the status of the Living City campaign? From what I can tell, there was some sort of, "Living City Finale" at the 30th anniversary bash, and not I guess it's kaput? Where does that leave the region, is there some sort of summary or product due out to sort of "transfer" the area to mainstream continuity? If anyone knows any good links to RPGA supplements detailing this area, I'd be grateful.

What sources do you have, to start with? The main ones are The City of Ravens Bluff, which includes most or all of the Vast material published in Polyhedron except the Maskyr's Eye writeup in #54-58 (and mentions New Hope), Forgotten Realms Adventures for the other cities, FRE2 Tantras on Tantras, information on Calaunt and Tantras etc. posted in Ed Greenwood's thread on the novel board, and the novel City of Ravens.
(The Vast isn't an outgrowth of the Living City campaign, but was around long before it.)
I haven't DMed much there, but Lashan has... |

I'm away from my sources at the moment, but didn't one of Elminster's Ecologies cover the Vast? |

I don't believe so Wooly. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Well, I've got all three campaign sets (1st ed. through the new book), City of Ravens Bluff, and a bunch of stuff culled from the web, most linked off of www.toril.info (a great resource, for those of you that haven't been there). I "lost track" of my copy of FR Adventures (never lend out your stuff ;) ), and I just started City of Ravens, as a matter of fact. I wouldn't mind tracking down FRE2 Tantras, I sorta collect old Realms stuff.
I found this for download, anyone know if this contains much that's not in CORB? http://www.svgames.com/tsr9282esd.html |

I've looked at LC1-3 but don't own them. The LC series contains LC1 Gateway to Ravens Bluff, LC2 Inside Ravens Bluff, LC3 Nightwatch In The Living City, and LC4 Port of Ravens Bluff. They're assemblages of lore generated by the Living City campaign, and thus have little to do with mainstream Realmslore, though Ed incorporated (with more grace than was warranted) many of their missteps into City of Ravens Bluff. LC3 is an adventure. Ed contributed to LC2, but I'd guess that would all be in City of Ravens Bluff. While we're citing sources, Rich Baker's writeup of his City of Ravens characters is in Polyhedron #144.
Usual scattering of other references to the Vast, of course. |

Started drawing up the map of New Hope today - maybe once it's "done-ish", I'll post it, along with the rest of my notes and people/place listings. New Hope Netbook, anyone? I'd be honored if anybody decided to build on my work, here - as I plan on making this my PCs' home base for some time to come, there should be lots of detail.

Sorry for the delay in entering the converstation, but I hope late is better then nothing. I haven't scanned Candlekeep in a while.
I've got a campaign set in Tantras in the Vast, and can offer up some info on the area. Personally, I never did play with Living City and have avoided the area of Ravens Bluff a bit. I will let you know that I am setting my campaign in 1340 DR, so I will have ignored many changes to the FR world and what has gone on. One example is that Ravens Bluff was a great city to use the Dungeon adventure "The Stink" in, as the city was in near chaos at the time. I could see the old poor section of the city turned over into a dump.
I had a decent website that had a map of Tantras with some java script, but a friend was hosting it and his web site is defenct now. I might be able to find a host. I had improved on the map and divided the city up into districts of my own devise. I also created a few locations on the map. I do have notes on the various districts and whatnot if you wanted them. I could email them to you.
I've thought about the economy of the Vast with what has been offered through several products and what Ed Greenwood has answered in the forums. One of the biggest trading partners for the Vast is the Moonsea region, particularly the eastern side (Mulmaster). The Moonsea is of the same cultural background (Damaran) and short on many naturual resources (including food). Mulmaster is connected via good roads with the Vast and trade easily flows north. Mineral wealth, furs, coin, and licqour flow into the Vast while food, leather, wood, cloth, and finished goods travel north into the Moonsea.
The economy inside the Vast is also split up a bit. Caluant specializes in leather goods and other live stock issues. Tantras handles wool, wood, and many wooden manufactured goods. Procampur exports jewels, jewelry, and other finery. I can't recall about Ravens Bluff, though. The few way trade goods flow into and out of the Vast are via the north road to Mulmaster, or through one of the port cities. Tantras is the primary port city, especially due to the cranes developed by the Church of Gond. They allow boats to be loaded and unloaded quicker. Ravens Bluff has usually been too chaotic to deal with, though might be doing better now. Calaunt dominates the leather goods and live stock markets (and I forgot what else), though not many people prefer to travel through that fey city.
Sembia imports many goods and is also a rival for trade in the Moonsea. There is a lingering chondathan influence (30%) that I tend to regard as mostly seeping sembianism. Many finished goods, such as paper, perfumes, books, and other refinary that are manufactured in Sembia get shipped into the Vast. The backlands are especially desiring the finished goods.
What else is there that I could offer you? I've got ideas of what modules I am going to plant in my players' way. I've started some of the plot threads now. I can go into detail about what I have developed for the orcs of the Vast. I am afraid that I haven't looked too close to what lies on the Fire River, as I have been centeralized in the Tantras area. I hope what I over is usefull and ask if there is anything I can help out with at all. |

Scribe Lashan hasn't posted anything here at Candlekeep in over 4 years, Wrigley. But he did visit these halls back in August. I'd recommend you view his profile page for possible alternate contact details. |
