What order are the books supposed to be read in? Do the Forgotten Realms books tie in with Dragon Lance?

Refer to the Forgotten Realms FAQ (http://www.candlekeep.com/fr_faq.htm) for a novel reading order list.
Realms novels are in no way related to Dragonlance novels or any other novel series.

I would really say that there almost doesn't exist any reading order, besides reading series from the beginning (book 1)

i agree there is no perscribed order in which to read the books in , but if u dont know where to start i suggest that u read them as they were published...or perhaps read them as the first book of the series or trilogy was published
example, since Darkwalker on moonshae was the first book published in the FR read the "moonshae Trilogy" first, "The Crystal Shard" was the second book published so read the "icewind dale" trilogy next..and so on...
Many of us on various Realms boards have created lists of all the books, mine is in microsoft word format, if u would like it, it has all 133 current books on it in order of publication
just leave your email.

But keep in mind that it can be quite difficult to find the old books in good shape, becouse they have been out of print for a long time.
I miss a lot of old books in my collection, which btw consists of 110 FR books. I will probably try to get them from ebay after i get a visa card

Some one askes for my e-mail address so that they could send me information about the books. For that person, and any one who might, I don't know, recognize the wonderful person I am(j/k) my e-mail is Locutus300000@aol.com I would be curious to know if anyone can identify what series of science fiction/fantasy the name locutus comes from, so if you think you know it, please feel free to make a guess (although i am not suggesting that this will be any fun for anyone who isn't A complete dork like me. I hear alot about the Spell Fire (Spellfire?) series, what is it about?

I disagree in their being no reading order, as you have to ensure that youre following the Realms time line, you dont want to get confused by reading a book that is set before the Time of Troubles after one that is set after, especially if you dont know what happened in that time as you havent read the Avatar Trilogy.
A reading order can be checked here: http://www.wizards.com/forgottenrealms/FR_Timeline.asp
I would also suggest reading a full trilogy rather than skipping from one book of one trilogy over to another trilogy. Ive tried this method and found it a bit more difficult to get fully back into the characters and remember past events when reading the 2nd book.

I have had no problems with reading books that take place after the time of troubles and then going back and reading books that take place before. But I think it depends on that I play in FR and know about history and stuff. If you dont rpg in FR, maybe it is a good idea to read the avatar trilogy first.

I was forced to read them all split up cuz there were only a hand full when i got into them...it wasnt to difficult, but i would have liked to have an entire trilogy infront of me, now-a-days with so many, i would agree to read trilogys in order...
but beginning with early published ones would be best...IMHO

ArcticKnight has hit the nail on the head. The FR novels can and should be enjoyed in whatever order you wish to read them in, wether it be the Moonshae series or the "Life and Times of Drizzt DoUrden". However, if you read a book that is part of a series you should read all of them in that series. |

You can look at a chronological list of all of the Forgotten Realms books if you start at the www.candlekeep.com homepage, then click on Tethtoril's bookshelf, click on single novels, and finally, there is a link to a chronological list near the top of the page. Hope this helps! |

I think everyone should listen to ArcticKnight, he sounds like he is very knowledgeable in the Forgotten Realms area. I would like to have that list of yours also ArcticKnight, if you would be so kind.
